Britney Spears's memoir "The Woman in Me" traces her life, from her early childhood to her rise to fame and conservatorship. It doesn't, however, cover one recent major event in Spears's life — her split from Sam Asghari.

Back in August, it was revealed that Spears and Asghari were going their separate ways after one year of marriage. The two met in 2016 on the set of the pop star's music video for "Slumber Party," and in her memoir, Spears writes that she knew she wanted Asghari in her life "immediately." Just two months before Spears's 13-year conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, the longtime couple announced their engagement on Instagram. "I can't f*cking believe it 💍💍💍💍💍💍❣️!!!!!!," the singer captioned a video featuring her custom diamond engagement ring.

On April 11, 2022, Spears and Asghari announced that they were expecting their first child together. The latter spoke about the pregnancy on Instagram, writing, "Fatherhood is something i have always looked forward to and i don't take lightly. It is the most important job i will ever do." A month after their announcement, though, the couple shared that they experienced a pregnancy loss. They later revealed that they were "moving forward" with their future and still planned to expand their family. Though Spears doesn't often mention Asghari in her memoir, she does briefly touch on that event, saying that she was "devastated" by the loss.

On June 9, 2022, after five years of dating and less than one year of being engaged, Spears and Asghari tied the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony in Los Angeles. A source told People that the singer cried several times on her big day — all "happy tears."

However, on Aug. 16, Asghari filed for divorce from Spears, citing irreconcilable differences, per court documents obtained by POPSUGAR. Asghari noted their date of separation as July 28, 2023. Reps for Spears and Asghari did not respond to POPSUGAR's requests for comments at the time.

Ahead, take a look at every big moment in Spears and Asghari's relationship timeline.

Spears and Asghari first met while filming the music video for her 2016 song "Slumber Party." In the video, Asghari plays the singer's love interest. The model reflected on working with Spears in a 2018 interview with Men's Health, saying, "I was excited that I get to meet one of the biggest artists of all time. I had butterflies." Asghari revealed that he attempted to break the ice with Spears by joking with her, but it didn't land as well as he'd hoped. "She said, 'Hi, I'm Britney,' and I said, 'I'm sorry. What's your name again?'" he said. "I tried to be funny. I don't think anybody got it."

February 2021: Asghari Supports Spears Amid the "Framing Britney Spears" Documentary's Release

The #FreeBritney movement — a fan-driven campaign that fought for the termination of Spears's 13-year conservatorship — steadily gained traction throughout 2021. The release of the New York Times documentary "Framing Britney Spears" — which traversed Spears's quick rise to fame as a teenager, her tumultuous young-adult life plagued by attacks from the media, and her father's role in her conservatorship — bolstered calls for the conservatorship to end.

As the spotlight on Spears intensified, Asghari spoke out to support Britney and call out her father, Jamie Spears, writing in an Instagram story (via E! News), "Now it's important for people to understand that I have zero respect for someone trying to control our relationship and constantly throwing obstacles our way. In my opinion, Jamie is a total d**k. I won't be going into details because I've always respected our privacy but at the same time, I didn't come to this country to not be able to express my opinion and freedom."

Asghari also told People at the time, "I have always wanted nothing but the best for my better half, and will continue to support her following her dreams and creating the future she wants and deserves."

June 2021: Britney Spears Gets Honest About Her Relationship With Sam Asghari in Court Testimony

Over the years, Spears kept quiet about her conservatorship. However, in June 2021, she gave a harrowing 24-minute testimony to a Los Angeles probate judge in an effort to end her conservatorship. She called the conservatorship abusive, giving more insight into how her father allegedly used it to control every aspect of her life — including her relationship with Asghari.

"If I didn't do any of my meetings and work from 8:00 to 6:00 at night — which is 10 hours a day, seven days a week, no days off — I wouldn't be able to see my kids or my boyfriend," Spears told the court (via Variety). "I feel like they're making me feel like I live in a rehab program. This is my home. I'd like for my boyfriend to be able to drive me in his car."

Later, she claimed that she was being prevented from getting married and having children with Asghari: "I would like to progressively move forward, and I want to have the real deal — I want to be able to get married and have a baby. I was told right now in the conservatorship, I'm not able to get married or have a baby. I have a (IUD) inside of myself right now so I don't get pregnant. I wanted to take the (IUD) out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won't let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don't want me to have children — any more children. So basically, this conservatorship is doing me waaay more harm than good. I deserve to have a life."

In response to Spears's testimony, Jamie Spears said he was "sorry to hear [Britney is] suffering and in so much pain" and that he "misses his daughter very much," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
