Justin Theroux Speaks Out About His "Gentle" Yet "Heartbreaking" Split From Jennifer Aniston

Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston famously split back in February after two years of marriage together. While the 47-year-old actor initially refrained from speaking publicly about their divorce, Justin recently told The New York Times that their separation truly was amicable and the great loss was that of their close friendship.

After the couple split, they released a statement explaining the decision "was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year" and they remained "two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship." Justin echoed those same sentiments and he explained there were no hard feelings or hostility when they parted ways.

"The good news is that was probably the most — I'm choosing my words really carefully — it was kind of the most gentle separation, in that there was no animosity," he said.

"Again, neither one of us is dead, neither one of us is looking to throw hatchets at each other," Justin continued. "It's more like, it's amicable. It's boring, but, you know, we respected each other enough that it was as painless as it could be."

While they strove to keep their split free from pain, Justin admits there has been inevitable sadness. "It was heartbreaking, only in the sense that the friendship would not be the same, as far as just the day to day," he explained. "But the friendship is shifting and changing, you know, so that part is something that we're both very proud of."

Justin continues to adjust to life under media scrutiny after his separation but coyly admits he may be dating again. Since the split, he's been linked to actresses Aubrey Plaza, Laura Harrier, and Emma Stone. When asked if he's currently seeing anyone, he laughed and said, "Is this the part where I coyly raise an eyebrow and not answer the question?"
