Spencer Hastings Could Absolutely Be "A.D." on Pretty Little Liars, and Here's Why

The season seven premiere of Pretty Little Liars has left us begging for more. In addition to giving us plenty of new questions to mull over, the new season has launched us headfirst into the show's next big mystery: who is "A.D."? The more we think about it — and the more we dig into information about Mary Drake — there's one suspect we can't seem to get off our minds: Spencer Hastings. Could she be the one who's running this whole operation? Keep reading to find out why it's not only possible, but almost probable.

She's Always Been Touted as the Smartest of All the Liars

There's no doubt that Spencer has the smarts to pull off this kind of trickery. She's always had perfect grades and she's clearly in a good spot as she pursues her own political dreams. Oh, and on that note, wasn't she pretty closely involved with all that digitally leaked information when it came to her mother's political campaign?

Spencer Got In on the Plan That Got Hanna Captured

"It was a well-thought-out plan," Spencer insists in the season seven premiere, as the girls seemingly bury a dead body. Back in May, we interviewed Troian Bellisario, the actress who plays Spencer, and she laid the whole thing out. "[Spencer] feels incredibly responsible for Hanna's disappearance. You know, it was Caleb and Hanna's plan, and Spencer was the one that said, 'You're not doing this alone.'" From this point, it's clear Spencer knows the ins and outs of the plan from the season six finale. Of course she needs an accomplice to grab Hanna, but she'd know exactly how to give everyone else the slip.

Spencer Definitely Has a Crazy Side

Let's not forget that Spencer is among the characters who have checked into Radley. It's possible she's always had a dark side, bubbling underneath her consciousness. And even if she hasn't, there's a chance she never quite recovered from her time as a patient.

She's Somehow Connected to Mary Drake

She's Somehow Connected to Mary Drake

The Hastings family has buried quite a few secrets over the years. The completely covered up the fact that Peter Hastings had an affair with Jessica DiLaurentis, and that Jason DiLaurentis is actually Spencer's half-brother. Mary Drake hints to Spencer that they met when she was very young — clearly, the Hastings family's connection to Mary Drake goes way back. If Spencer is, in any way, entangled in Mary Drake's web, her intentions may be much more sinister than we realize.

That Season Premiere "Dream Sequence" With Hanna

There's something off about that whole dream sequence with Hanna. It's so vivid, first of all. The second, more troubling fact is that Hanna has had a "hallucination" like this before. Remember when she's in the hospital — after "A" nearly runs her over with a car — and Ali materializes for a rather cryptic conversation? If you remember, Ali wasn't dead at all, and she was actually there. If Spencer is in on this whole game, Hanna's most recent dream may have just been real. Maybe she doesn't want Hanna to die, so she gives her a hint to escape. Maybe Spencer's accomplice is the one who really wants to keep Hanna, and Spencer doesn't really need her. Either way, there's a chance Spencer really speaks to Hanna.

Those Enigmatic Hallucinations in Radley Sanitarium

In a season six dream sequence, Spencer finds herself in Radley Sanitarium. She chases a little girl through the halls and watches as she dances in a dusty, abandoned room. With her long, stringy dark hair, it's hard not to see this young girl's resemblance to Spencer. The dance paints a picture of a dark past, perhaps a suppressed, traumatic memory of Spencer's. If Mary was in Radley and Spencer is somehow related to Mary, is there a chance Spencer was there too, when she was very young?

Her Perceived Connection to Charles DiLaurentis

Her Perceived Connection to Charles DiLaurentis

This might be the most damning piece of evidence that ties Spencer into everything else. We must remember that Spencer remembers Charles's name in a dream. Then, as that demented prom goes down in flames, Charles and Spencer meet. Why does Charles seek Spencer out? Could it be that they have a long-lost connection that we haven't seen or heard of yet?

It's hard not to see the greater implications. It's very possible Spencer and Charles are childhood friends. Perhaps Spencer was, at one point, a Radley patient as well. Perhaps Spencer is at the center of this whole mystery surrounding Mary Drake, Charles/Charlotte DiLaurentis, and even Radley Sanitarium as a whole. Only time will tell, but make no mistake: we've got our eye on Spencer Hastings.
