Netflix's "One Piece" to Return For More Episodes

The live-action "One Piece" is officially coming back to Netflix for more. Season one of the anime adaptation premiered at the end of August and quickly became a fan favorite. Netflix announced in a statement on Sept. 14 that the live-action "One Piece" is set to return with more episodes and adventures in the future.

"One Piece" creator and illustrator Eiichiro Oda also shared the news in a video, saying in part, "Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news. Netflix has decided to renew the show! The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward!" He added, "It'll still take a while to get the scripts ready, so please be patient."

Oda first published the original "One Piece" manga in 1997. It follows an aspiring pirate named Monkey D. Luffy who wants to find the titular one piece, which would make him king of the pirates. The manga is still ongoing (and Luffy has not found the one piece yet). The hit anime series "One Piece" premiered in 1999 and has already released over 1,000 episodes. Fifteen seasons of the anime are streaming now on Netflix.

Earlier in September, Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios — which produces the live-action "One Piece" — told Variety that season two was actually already in good shape even though the show hadn't been renewed yet. "We've got scripts ready," he said. He noted that production is currently on hold because of the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes, but if they end soon, fans could get new episodes "realistically, hopefully, a year away, if we move very quickly, and that is a possibility." Adelstein added, "Somewhere between a year and 18 months, we could be ready for air."

"One Piece" Season 2 Cast

"One Piece" season one stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, Vincent Regan as Monkey D. Garp, Jeff Ward as Buggy the Clown, and Morgan Davies as Koby.

One of the biggest "One Piece" characters who didn't appear in season one that fans are looking forward to seeing? Tony Tony Chopper, the Straw Hat Crew's doctor. Oda even teased his arrival in the season two announcement, saying, "From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor. We will see!" However, adapting Chopper to live action presents a considerable challenge since the character is a reindeer-human hybrid. One of the "One Piece" showrunners, Steven Maeda, told IGN in a Sept. 12 interview that he loves Chopper, but "It's a challenge for sure" to include him in this series. So fans will have to wait to see what the show decides to do.
