These Popular Halloween Candies Are Peanut-Free For Kids With Allergies

In the last decade or so, it seems as though the number of children with peanut allergies has skyrocketed, leading to schools banning popular lunch items like peanut butter and causing an increase for general concern, especially around Halloween, when the chance of a child with an allergy consuming a piece of candy with peanuts in it is high.

Because the holiday can be so treacherous for a child with allergies and their parents, initiatives like the Teal Pumpkin Project — a campaign raising awareness for food allergies by encouraging homes to put out a teal pumpkin to alert trick-or-treaters to the fact that they have nonfood treats to give out on Halloween — are trying to create safer, happier environments for kids with allergies.

Although we encourage anyone who can to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project, we all know the temptation to hand out (and consume) delicious candies on Halloween is strong. If your child has a peanut allergy — or you want to make sure you're helping to protect those kids who visit your house on Halloween — we've compiled a list of all the popular candies that are safe for them to consume, provided they have no other allergies or food restrictions, like to soy and eggs.

To note: Manufacturing sites and standards can always change. Be extra diligent and read the labels of the below candies carefully to ensure the warning on the treats that says they weren't processed on manufacturing equipment shared with peanuts hasn't changed. If you're unsure that a candy is safe, best practice is to skip that treat.
