It's not exactly an official White House initiative, but Michelle Obama has noticeably spent her years as first lady spotlighting young American designers. With her appearance in the most recent issue of Variety, she continues to do just that, wearing a custom Jonathan Simkhai creation:

"It was a huge honor and brand milestone to work with Michelle Obama's team on a custom dress for the cover of Variety," Simkhai told WWD. "Michelle represents the definition of a strong, fearless, inspiring, and truly elegant First Lady, and seeing her in one of my dresses was a dream come true."

Simkhai, who took home a 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund win, has become one of the buzziest names in the business, thanks to his contemporary take on sexy dressing, and has a following that includes trendsetters like Gigi Hadid. Still, we have to imagine that Michelle's appearance on this cover will earn the designer a new kind of following — we're guessing from power women like Obama who dress impeccably and with purpose.
