10 Unconventional Models Who Helped Diversify Fashion in 2015

There's no doubt this year that body image and diversity were the two major topics in the fashion industry. Brands created feel-good campaigns and models themselves took a strong stance on the heated issues. Ladies like Ashley Graham rallied behind the plus-size movement while model Madeline Stuart proved a genetic disorder doesn't make anyone less beautiful. These unconventional models were just some of the firestarters in an important conversation about diversity.

As the fashion industry continues to change and embrace new It girls, these ladies are no longer just the face of a brand or campaign. Before we celebrate 2016, it's crucial to reflect back on how the 10 ladies below affected the industry not only with their looks, but with their unique voices.

Winnie Harlow

Who: Canadian model Winnie Harlow was first discovered on social media and then went on to compete in America's Next Top Model season 21. The 21-year-old is known for having vitiligo, a rare skin condition that causes loss of color in blotches, but has not let that stop her from walking the runways. In an interview with Complex, she said, "I am happy with my skin, and I’m proud of my skin, which is why I wear it so boldly. But if a job wanted me to, say, try a smoky eye and cover the vitiligo around my eye, I wouldn’t have a problem with that." She added, "I’m not my skin."

Break-Out Moment of 2015: Winnie was presented as the new face of Desigual in February 2015 and walked the runway for the brand during New York Fashion Week.
