I have a thing for vintage glassware. It started when I found the same set of silver-rimmed cocktail glasses Don Draper clutched throughout "Mad Men," and it quickly snowballed. My cabinets were already overflowing when I inherited my grandma's wedding china. It was getting to the point where I was either going to have to drink my morning coffee in a Moscow mule mug for efficiency or let some of my collection go. Squeezing a china cabinet into my dining room seemed even more impractical, until I found the Castlery Harper Sideboard ($1,299).

What I Like About Castlery's Harper Sideboard

Taking cues from midcentury design, it could easily pass as a pristine vintage piece I stumbled upon at a flea market. It has a rich walnut hue, an oval silhouette, and slatted, sliding doors ornamented with sleek brass pulls. The sliding doors have a cool retro vibe, but I also love that instead of opening out like traditional cabinets, they don't take up any extra space when they're open. The curved shape is stunning and helps to soften the room's rectangular dining table, rug, and art.

The sideboard is slim at just 17.7 inches in diameter, so it doesn't awkwardly jut out too far, leaving plenty of room in between the sideboard and dining table. It's 59 inches wide, which is petite enough to still have some wall space on either side. I was a little worried that its compact size meant storage would be pretty limited, but it's deceptively spacious. Not only did I fit all of the china, but I also had two whole shelves on the opposite side to store napkins, glassware, and other barware. I realized that the other perk of having a sideboard versus a cabinet is that the top of the sideboard acts as valuable storage space. Our dining room gets a little dark, so having a spot for a table lamp has made a huge difference. I also freed up some counter space by placing my fruit bowl on the sideboard. When I'm hosting a party, I can lay a table runner and trivets on top of it to hold food and bottles of wine instead of crowding the dining table.

What's Worth Noting About Castlery's Harper Sideboard

The sideboard is made from engineered wood with an oak veneer frame, so it's not solid wood, but it feels very sturdy. It has a walnut stain and appears just a bit darker in person than it does on the website. Some customers also mentioned this in their reviews, and I agree. The color is rich and warm without having any red undertones. It's a true walnut shade, which complements the midcentury design.

Who Is Castlery's Harper Sideboard Best For?

If you're a sucker for midcentury design and in need of small-space storage solutions, this piece could be perfect for you. I highly recommend busting out your tape measure and even using painter's tape on the floor to block off where you're envisioning the sideboard being placed.

It's also a breeze to put together. When it arrived, it came almost completely assembled, which is beyond convenient if you aren't especially handy or just don't have the energy or time to assemble anything remotely complicated. All that needed to be added were the slim legs, which were easy to twist into place.
