These Planned Marches For Science and Climate Change Are a Big "Eff You" to Trump

After all mentions of climate change were deleted from the White House's website, an idea spawned on Reddit to start a scientists' march on Washington. The protest is called "March For Science" and the date has yet to be announced.

On the march's website, the group expresses the reason for protest:

"There are certain things that we accept as facts with no alternatives. The Earth is becoming warmer due to human action. The diversity of life arose by evolution. Politicians who devalue expertise risk making decisions that do not reflect reality and must be held accountable. An American government that ignores science to pursue ideological agendas endangers the world."

According to The Washington Post, University of Texas Health Science Center postdoctoral fellow Jonathan Berman organized the march and created a Facebook page, Twitter handle, and website to promote it. The movement is becoming increasingly popular, with its Facebook page currently up to 136,115 likes. On Twitter, the march has 169,000 followers.

In an interview with the Post, Berman explained that when federal agencies were banned from communicating with the public, it made them even more passionate about their cause. "We were inspired (well, infuriated) by the current attacks on science from the new administration," cochair Caroline Weinberg, science writer and public health researcher, wrote in an email. "Slashing funding and restricting scientists from communicating their findings (from tax-funded research!) with the public is absurd and cannot be allowed to stand as policy," Berman said.

You don't have to be a scientist to participate, either, just a supporter of facts.

If you're far from DC, the organizers have explained that they plan to hold marches in other major cities as well. Follow the group's social pages for update on a date and time.

So everyone knows: we intend to hold sister marches, but none are planned yet. As of today, this is our only twitter account. #ScienceMarch

In addition to the March For Science, a similar protest, called "People's March Climate," will be held in Washington DC on April 29, 2017, close to President Trump's 100th day in office.

Perhaps these protests will be as successful as the Women's March and call deserving attention to climate change.
