The Clintons and Bushes Confirm They Will Attend Trump's Inauguration

Update: Both Hillary and Bill Clinton will attend Donald Trump's inauguration after all, according to CNN. George W. Bush and his wife Laura have also accepted the invitation and will attend the ceremony on Jan. 20.

Original Story: With the inauguration less than a month away, on Jan. 20, former presidents are facing a difficult decision: to attend Donald Trump's swearing in or break tradition and decline to appear. It is an especially awkward choice considering no former president, Republican or Democrat, endorsed Trump.

Presently, only Jimmy Carter has confirmed his attendance despite endorsing Hillary Clinton in her run for the presidency. Carter announced his decision to his Sunday school class in Georgia earlier in December, reports Politico.

George H. W. Bush will not be at the ceremony, according to his spokesman, who said the former president's age and health will prevent him from attending. George W. Bush has declined to reveal his decision, at least until the New Year, according to his spokesman Freddy Ford.

Bill Clinton's acceptance of Trump's invitation is particularly complicated, and he has also not yet confirmed his decision. If Clinton refuses to attend, he risks being accused of not accepting the transition of power, which was a contentious campaign dilemma.

Clinton and Trump have sparred on Twitter in recent weeks over a comment he made about the president-elect's knowledge, so Clinton's attendance could be quite uncomfortable — the muckraking during the campaign notwithstanding.

President Obama is obviously obligated to attend the ceremony as he will transfer the position's power to the incoming president.
