Study Up on 100 Years of Black Hair History in Less Than a Minute

Black hair is something that fascinates most (how can it be kinky and straight . . . at the same time?). But this new video by YouTube user Cut Video shows how versatile black styling trends have been over the last 100 years. The time-lapse starts with 1910 and spans to current times. In less than 60 seconds, the stylists re-create all the classics, like Billie Holiday's floral updo, Diana Ross's bouffant, and the box braids of the '90s. It all culminates in the resurgence of the hottest mane trend of the 1970s — the Afro — in 2010. Clearly it's no coincidence that Madame C.J. Walker, the first American woman to become a millionaire through self-made business, was a woman of color working in the hair care industry. Black women have always considered their strands their crowning glory, whether they're rocking extralong extensions or sporting natural curls, and this video is proof. Also make sure to watch the original viral video that shows how beauty trends have evolved over time as a whole.
