American Horror Story is known for its ability to transform an ensemble cast from season to season — the cast of American Horror Story: Hotel is no exception — but there are a handful of guest stars who have only made brief appearances. We're going back and remembering the 25 best guest spots on the show, from the first season all the way up to Hotel!
During the first season, Rickards, now known for MTV's Awkward, portrayed Chloe, one of Tate's victims in the Westfield High Massacre who comes back to haunt him on Halloween.
In one of the more notable guest appearances from the first season, Modern Family's Stonestreet played Derrick. He's deathly afraid of urban legends, and as part of his therapy, Ben (Dylan McDermott) tells him to go home and face his fear of Piggyman. He does — and then is promptly murdered by a burglar hiding in his shower.
Suvari appeared on the show as the infamous murder victim Elizabeth Short, known as The Black Dahlia, in a flashback. She visits the dentist, who practices at his home. Can you guess where he lives? Yep, it's the Murder House.
And who played that sadistic dentist? None other than Scandal's Josh Malina!
Best known for her stint on Parenthood, Salazar also appeared on American Horror Story as Maria, a nurse who is stabbed to death inside the Murder House.
Asylum also has its fair share of guest stars, beginning with Argo's DuVall. She played Wendy, Lana Winters's (Sarah Paulson) girlfriend.
McShane gave American Horror Story fans some festive nightmares as a patient who escapes and goes on a murder spree inside the asylum while dressed as Santa Claus.
Potente (The Bourne Identity) showed up as Charlotte, who is committed to Briarcliff by her husband. He can't handle her claims that she is actually Anne Frank . . . but she might be telling the truth.
The normally dashing Consuelos had a small role on Asylum as Spivey, a bully with a compulsive masturbation issue.
Levine played one half of a couple exploring Briarcliff Asylum in the modern day . . .
. . . While Dewan played the other half. Spoiler alert: things don't turn out very well for the honeymooners.
On the third season, Coven, we get even more guest stars. Lupone's arc gets really twisted, really quickly. At first, she just appears to be a little overprotective of her son, but then there's that Clorox enema incident.
Though she essentially became a regular as Penny on Freak Show, Gummer first appeared on Coven as Millie, a student at Miss Robichaux's Academy who helps kill the Axeman in 1919.
Yes, that's Reddick (The Wire) as Papa Legba, the gatekeeper of the spirit world who terrorizes Marie and Fiona on Coven.
And of course, that's Fleetwood Mac songstress Stevie Nicks as Stevie Nicks, Misty Day's hero from Coven.
Moving on to Freak Show, legendary singer LaBelle appeared in five episodes as Dora, Gloria's maid who is murdered by Dandy.
Who could forget Bentley as Edward Mordrake, the man with an evil face on the back of his head? Mordrake, who is based on a real person, visits the freak show before killing Twisty and taking him under his wing as a ghost. Thankfully, we'll get to see a whole lot more of Bentley next season!
Another future American Horror Story: Hotel cast member! Poor Bomer. He played Andrew, a prostitute with whom Freak Show's Dell is in love. Unfortunately, he is killed off within one episode by Dandy. At least we get to see him shirtless.
Harris wins the title of American Horror Story: Freak Show's flashiest guest star. He played Chester, a chameleon salesman with a weird puppet. There's really no role that Harris can't play, but he really nailed this one.
Harris's real-life husband Burtka also made a (more subtle) cameo on Freak Show. He played Elsa's TV producer/husband in the finale.
Rabe didn't join the cast in a full-time role for Hotel, but she does turn up as serial killer Aileen Wuornos on the first Halloween episode.
Lu and the Glee star play horrible hipsters on Hotel.
The supermodel turns up on Hotel as a fashionable New Yorker who visits the Cortez and ends up dead.
Lynch, who played Freak Show's main antagonist, Twisty, donned clown paint once again as the famous killer Gacy.
