The Captain Marvel Soundtrack Is Packed With '90s Throwbacks

Everett Collection

Captain Marvel is a landmark film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a lot of reasons. It's the first film, after a decade of Marvel movies, to have a female protagonist and a female director, and it's also the last movie before Avengers: Endgame brings the entire first three phases of the MCU to a close. Captain Marvel also has the distinction of being one of only two movies (the other being the World War II-set Captain America: The First Avenger) not set in the present day.

The origin story and early adventures ofCarol Danvers are set in the 1990s, and the film definitely leans hard into that '90s aesthetic, from its visuals to its '90s-action-movie style. Perhaps the most obviously '90s part of the movie: its soundtrack, which features hits from R.E.M., Nirvana, TLC, and more faves of the decade. Although the official Captain Marvel soundtrack only features the original score by Pinar Toprak, we've rounded up some of the best pop songs featured in the film!
