Model Candice Huffine didn't plan to be a role model, but she takes that job very seriously. When she started modeling, she says, "I lived in a non-social-media world, and I was navigating this fashion industry as a girl who didn't quite fit in." With social media at her fingertips, she feels a greater responsibility. "Now that we have these platforms to effect change, we can't be quiet anymore," Huffine says.
That's the driving motivation behind Day/Won, her activewear line that launched in October and just dropped bunch of new styles. We caught up with her at POPSUGAR Play/Ground, where she not only spoke on a panel but personally worked the Day/Won booth all weekend.
The size-inclusive line goes to size 32, and Huffine made a point to have all sizes on display, since women who wear a size 12 or above often can't try on or even touch clothes that fit them in the store. She recalled the joy one customer expressed when she found her size on the rack. "I could have closed up the booth right after that," Huffine said. "I'm just trying to make something that I always needed. Now that I'm in a position to create and share this brand, I want to make sure there is something for everyone and I can give back."
The line's appeal goes further: it's American-made, cut and sewn in New York City, and made from recycled materials. For instance, the leggings are made from 80 percent recycled bottles. Day/Won also has new products for Pride month that donate a portion of proceeds to the ACLU. "We are all about winning your day, whatever that looks like for you," Huffine said. "At the end of the day, you ask yourself, how was my day won? You should do whatever it is that makes you feel your best."
She's also very conscious of her presence on social media and how it inspires other women. "I'm hyperaware that people are reading the things I put into the world," Huffine says. "For instance, I'm a new runner and I've been vocal about that journey. Anytime I feel like I want to quit running and give up, I think of the other women who are there with me. I put a little weight on my shoulders to do it for all of us."
