This Hair Salon Just Made Its Pricing Gender-Neutral

Times are most definitely a changin', and this Ottawa, Canada, salon is making a major update to its haircut pricing lists in honor of gender equality. Starting on Aug. 27, Ottawa's Pride Day, Fady Assad's Hair Junkie salon will begin gender-neutral pricing. "You pay for the time and products we use for your service and if that time is the same as the MAN or WOMAN in the next chair, then it will cost you the same price!" the salon shared in an Instagram post.

It's no secret that men's haircuts have long been less expensive than women's — the same goes for countless personal care products, from razors to deodorant. This salon's change is one more step to eliminating the dreaded "pink tax" for good. The rest of the Instagram post read:

"Why is it that a female with short hair pays more for a haircut than a male with long? The answer to THAT riddle is easily found in history, which reveals that since the first day human beings stopped thinking of their hair as just an extra layer of insulation, and instead, a way of adorning themselves for pleasure, ritual and attraction, a woman's hair has been, well. . . complicated. Complicated as in Pompadour, Gibson Girl, Finger Waves, Roller Sets, Up Do's, LIFE CONSUMING complicated! Are you following me? But times have changed. It's some easy math that shows these numbers don't add up, and Hair Junkie is about to apply a FIX which is long overdue."

In addition to Ottawa's Hair Junkie salon, Vacancy Project in New York City, Salon Absinthe in Knoxville, TN, and Logan Parlor salon in Chicago are some other spots that have started rolling out this awesome change for equality. It's an inspiring sign of the direction the beauty industry is going in.

As Hair Junkie's salon puts it, "Prices are transparent. Prices are fair. Prices are neutral because Hair has NO gender!"
