Demi Lovato's 12 Beauty Tips to Feel More Confident Every Day

Meeting Demi Lovato felt like chatting with an edgy Disney princess. She was kind and warm, yet she has that badass, girl-power attitude. When it comes to her style, the popstar is gorgeous with luminous skin, beautiful brown doe eyes, and a megawatt smile. Her pretty-girl makeup was juxtaposed by a chin-length, tousled brunette bob — which we know is tame compared to some of her rainbow-bright dye jobs.

But what makes Demi a standout in the young Hollywood crowd is her determination to empower women. Through her lyrics, inspiring quotes, and openness about her own struggles, she acknowledges that no one is perfect — not even celebrities. Demi's latest hit song, "Confident," sings this point home with messages like: "I used to hold my freak back. Now I'm letting go. I make my own choice. Yeah I run this show." Who are we to disagree?

Perhaps this inner and outer beauty is what attracted NYC New York Color to tap Demi as its global ambassador. (It also scored her a hot boyfriend!)

Since Demi seems to have it all figured out, we asked her how to live life more confidently (it's not always easy!). And so we present her top 12 tips for being your best self, written in her very own words.

(P.S. we have intel that Demi is launching something in 2016 that will help you feel and look that much more confident!)

Treat Yo Self (Well)

"My first tip to being confident is that it has to start with treating yourself well. The ultimate goal is to learn how to love yourself and the skin that you're in, and be content with yourself as a person — what you look like, whatever. It's about taking care of yourself. When you start to take care of yourself, you start to love yourself, you feel confident."

Stay in Your Own Lane

"Don't compare yourself to other people — which is something I easily do. You know it's really easy to compare, walking down the street, looking at a Victoria's Secret model on a poster and thinking, 'Wow, that's not what I look like.'

"But then, I have people around me that will check me and be like, 'Yeah, but you have an awesome voice.' Or, 'You're a very talented, funny person.' I have a great support system, so surround yourself with people who are supportive."

Makeup Can Be a Remedy

"Whenever you want to feel a little dolled up, put on some makeup. I don't think there's anything wrong with guys wearing makeup, either. How is it fair for girls to be able to cover their blemishes and guys not be able to? By the way — all those heartthrobs — they all wear the makeup.

"What makes me feel great is making it look as natural as possible. I don't like to wear a lot of foundation day to day. So NYC New York Color Get-It-All Stick (out in January) is really light, but it leaves you looking fresh and with good coverage.

"I always do my brows, just because I think that's important, and they shape your face. It's nice to feel polished when you walk into work or something."

Love Yourself to Find Love

"In order to get into a healthy relationship, you have to learn to love yourself first, and you have to be able to take care of yourself. You have to be able to not rely on other people for confidence or comfort. That's when you get to have healthy relationships, when you start to love yourself."

Work Out, Feel Happy

"Fitness and diet really changes your mind with the way that you look at things. Whether it's working out and getting a good workout in, or if it's just getting outside and walking. Do something for your body — it's about self-love. It doesn't have to be, 'Oh I need to get to the gym to lose weight.' Your body produces natural levels of serotonin, and you get the endorphins. It literally, physically affects you and how you feel. It makes you enjoy life a little more."

What You Put in Your Body Counts

"I noticed that when I eat unhealthily, I break out. It is true. It's like when you're being good to your body, and then you put something in it that it's not used to. And it's like, 'Wait a minute — I need to get this out of me.'

"Also, another thing is fish oil. You can either eat fish or you can take fish oil pills. Those are really good for your skin because it has omega-3s in it."

Water Is Your BFF

"Drinking a lot of water really helps me. I've had great skin growing up, fortunately. It hasn't been something where I make sure that I eat fish. I just make sure that I drink a lot of water, because I can literally see a difference on my face when I know I'm dehydrated."

A DIY Manicure Can Be Meditative

"I always try to keep my nails looking good. For some reason, if my hands or my toes don't look good, I feel like a hot mess. So I'll even do my own nails at night or in the morning. It's kind of like my therapy, actually. When I need to zone out and do a little distraction meditation, I like to do my nails."

A Good Hair Day Goes a Long Way

"When my hair looks good, I feel good. I feel polished. Normally I just scrunch it [when it's drying], because my hair is naturally wavy. Or I'll throw a couple curls in, or I'll straighten it — whatever I feel like doing that day."

Use Hair Color to Make a Statement

"I think the dark is my favorite color on me. Before you [dye your hair a rainbow], you have to strip your hair of all color. So it's going to be damaging to your hair, but if you still want to do it, go for it. Express yourself in whatever way you want to."

Scent Is a Powerful Mood Booster

"I actually have bad allergies, so I don't wear perfume. I can't. One spray, and I'm sneezing up a storm. You know those kiosks in the airport with the perfume? Yeah, that's like my biggest nightmare. If there were cats in there, it would be even worse!

"But anyways, in my skin care line, Devonne by Demi, I actually now have essential oils. So I will rub on oils instead of spraying on chemicals. When you smell good, you feel good. It's as simple as that. Some of the oils are relaxing."

Music Is Like Medicine

"Listen to music that resonates with you. Sometimes you need to listen to emotional music to get out whatever you're feeling, and sometimes you need to listen to music that's going to pump you up and make you feel confident."
