Kim Kardashian Confesses That She Struggles to Style North's Hair

You may have observed that North West is most frequently seen with her hair up in a topknot or ponytail but very rarely in any other style. There's a reason for this: in a recent episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian confessed that though she's been "practicing a lot," her "braiding skills are a disaster."

"North is so proud of her curly hair," she explained, "but she's very opinionated on how she wants to wear her hair. And as a mom, you don't want to have to tell her, 'I don't know how to do your hair.'" Kim enlisted the help of Kim Kimble, owner of West Hollywood salon Kimble Hair Studio and stylist to celebrities like Beyoncé, Gabrielle Union, and Shakira, who coached the reality star on how to up her braid game.

Though it took a lot of experimentation for Kim to master the simple plaits (she even took a salon prop head home with her to practice on!), she was finally able to create North's desired style. However, it's worth noting that Kim is not the only mom to face this issue. It can be a challenge for parents of multiracial children — or those who have adopted kids with different hair textures — to style hair that is different from their own.

Thankfully, you don't need to have a celebrity stylist on speed dial to learn how to style curly hair. There are plenty of resources available on the internet, such as our friends over at Naturally Curly, Curly Nikki, and countless YouTube tutorials. Additionally, you can find books like Chocolate Hair Vanilla Care: A Parent's Guide to Beginning Natural Hair Styling ($19), which was written by a white adoptive mom to a black daughter.
