I Slept, Showered, and Worked Out In Tarte's Sweatproof Mascara to See If It Lasted

I hold my mascara to a higher standard than I hold myself. I give myself leeway when it comes to working out, eating well, and even washing my hair regularly, but any lash formula I wear doesn't get to slack off. A mascara is deemed a failure and banished from my makeup bag if it doesn't keep my fringe looking flawless at all times, and I really mean it when I say "at all times." Sleeping, showering, sweating — even if I look like death warmed over, my lashes need to hold up. So when the Tarte team invited me to Canyon Ranch wellness resort to try out the brand's new sweatproof mascara, Lifted, I was ready to put it to an aggressive series of tests.

Lifted ($23) is part of Tarte's athleisure beauty line, which was designed for women to wear before, during, and after workouts.

"We like to think of it as the yoga pants of skin care," explained Tarte founder and CEO Maureen Kelly. "It's totally effortless and comfortable, but still cool."

She added, "There's no fear about sweating in your products, not only because they're clinically and consumer tested to be longwearing or sweatproof, but also because you won't be absorbing any icky, bad ingredients back into your skin when your pores open up during a workout."

Because my time at Canyon Ranch was packed with fun fitness and relaxation activities, it was an ideal opportunity to really get to know Lifted's formula. This mascara, which is a rich brown-black hue, comes in a funky rubberized tube that won't slip out of sweaty hands. The wand features a standard bristled brush that grabs and coats every lash without clumping. Read on to see the formula on my real lashes . . . and the surprising results.

Here we go! For your viewing pleasure, I've applied Lifted, a brown-black shade, only to one eye for these first two images so you can see how much definition and length it provides. On the left, you can see that my fringe looks superfeathery and crisply defined, while my bare lashes on the right seem kind of wimpy. Here I've used about three coats. I am a mascara addict and usually apply until my eyelids feel heavy, but I wanted to showcase the more natural look of this formula while still proving that it's clump-free.

Now that my eyes are closed, you can observe that my lashes look a few millimeters longer. From here on out, I'll be wearing Lifted on both of my eyes.

After Boxing

The first test I submitted this mascara to was an intense 45-minute boxing class. This was much more rigorous than my typical cardio routines of choice — I even ended up with bruises on my knuckles! — and I sweated pretty profusely. (You can see how red and, er, damp my face looks.) Despite this, my lashes held up without a trace of smudging or clumping.

If not for the ruddiness, you might not be able to tell that I put my lashes through the ringer. Still perfect.

After Showering

I was obviously disgusting after my boxing class, so I hopped in the shower to rinse off the grime. However, I left my mascara undisturbed to see how it fared as I bathed. For my shower, I treated my lashes as if they had extensions on to avoid contact with water. (To cleanse my face, I used a washcloth and carefully wiped around the periphery of my eyes, but not the area itself.) Despite the steam and occasional water droplets, my lashes did not wilt or smudge.

Seriously, I couldn't believe they held up so well. But as it was time to tuck in for the night, I was curious to see if they could they survive being smushed into my pillowcase. I'm also a side sleeper who's prone to tossing and turning, so this was going to be a tough challenge.

Spoiler alert: the mascara held up incredibly well over night. Here, I've added a bit of tinted moisturizer to my skin and dabbed on a little lip color, but my lashes looked as if I've touched them up, too. I swear that I didn't; I just ran my finger over them to separate any minor clumping. Nothing more invasive than that occurred. There was no smudging or flaking of the formula on my face or my pillow.

You can see very minor clumping on the left side, which vanished as soon as I uncrossed the lashes with my finger. The formula hadn't stuck them together — they were just tangled from sleeping on that side of my face.

After a fantastic hour-long Zumba Step class, I couldn't believe my eyes: Streakless, defined, and no signs of fading. At this point, about 24 hours had passed, and I was wondering if Lifted was completely invincible.

After having my eyelids smushed into a massage table's face cradle for an hour, then sitting in a very humid steam room for 10 minutes, I finally experienced a bit of smudging. (It was so muggy in there, I thought I was going to pass out . . . and my contact lenses fogged up.) But you'll notice that my lashes are still clump-free, and that slight smear under my eyes could definitely be removed with a cleansing wipe, or even just a slightly damp tissue.

Overall, I'd trust this mascara to withstand some seriously strenuous wear. While I traditionally prefer intensely black formulas, I'll be making an exception for Lifted: any product that thrives under such exacting experimentation deserves a place in my makeup bag.
