It's hard not to fall in love with Antoni Porowski's eloquence, kindness, and love of teaching people how to make guacamole on Queer Eye. Just like you see on the show, Porowski is trying to be his best self in real life, and encouraging others to do the same.

While you may associate Porowski exclusively with food, he's picked up quite a few beauty tips since the series premiered. "I basically didn't wash my face before Queer Eye came about," he told POPSUGAR during a recent Olly Vitamins interview. "[Now] I just love the ritual of [a skincare routine] and getting ready for bed. It's something that I do for myself as a little act of self-care."

Ahead, find more of Porowski's self-care tips, the travel to-dos he's learned from other castmates, and how his approach to beauty has changed since the beginning of Queer Eye.

Since the premiere of Queer Eye in 2018, Porowski's approach to beauty has changed in a big way. In addition to adopting a skincare routine, he's also gotten smarter about sun safety. "The misconception for me before was that you only needed SPF if you're literally going to be sitting on the beach in the Caribbean, but that's not true at all," he said. "You get those harmful rays wherever you are. Harmful rays do not discriminate wherever you are on the planet. That's something that I try to use every day."

He's also learned the importance of keeping his skin well moisturized, and shared that his costar, grooming-expert Jonathan Van Ness, taught him how to maintain that hydration even when traveling. "Jonathan taught me this: put on [hydrating gels] when you are on a really long flight," he said. "My skin tends to get really dry, so I drink a lot of water and I put on a really nice hydrating gel. It makes my face all nice and plump so I don't feel dry and crusty after a flight."

On His New Interest in Makeup

During season two of Queer Eye, Porowski started wearing eyeliner when he noticed his groomer was wearing some. "She was explaining what eyeliner was, and how it works, and how you have to basically draw along the inside of the eye and it really makes your eye pop," he said. "And I was just like, oh, why don't we try that? So I did it and I kind of really liked it."

The experience changed his perception of makeup. "It's incredible how makeup can really accentuate parts of you," he said. "I always thought makeup was just made to cover up. But in many instances, it's actually used to accentuate other parts of you."

He said he'd like to keep wearing the liner (which he thinks is by Bobbi Brown) on the show. "Every season, there should be one little moment where I put on a little eyeliner and show that guys are allowed to wear it, too," he said.

While Porowski doesn't have any beauty recipes of his own, he did learn one from his Queer Eye costar Tan France that includes a snack he loves. "You basically take a bit of green tea, you steep it for about a minute in really hot water, and then you tear open the contents of the sachet," he said. "You mix the inside with Greek yogurt, and it's really cold at first. Then you just basically apply a really big coat of Greek yogurt with green tea to your face."

The mask, he claimed, tightens your skin without stinging or feeling uncomfortable like other skincare products might. "I don't know if it's the cold, or the lactic acid, or the probiotics, but your face feels really nice and refreshed [after using it]."

How He Practices Self-Care

During the third season of Queer Eye in Kansas City, MO, Porowski was very sleep deprived. Between filming the series and working on his cookbook, he was only getting four to five hours of sleep a night. "When I came back, I decided that it was something that I really wanted to change," he said. "I've implemented different things into my evening to make going to sleep more attractive and something to look forward to. I have little remedies that I use, like fresh-grated ginger with grapefruit and honey and hot water to help me calm down a bit."

He also has started using melatonin to help unwind. "The [Olly] melatonin gummies ($14) have really come in handy," he said. "I pop two of those and I set my alarm — this is a new nonnegotiable. Whenever I can, it's eight hours of sleep. It's something that's super important because it allows me to function better."
