Inside Rob Lowe's Life as a Dad

Rob Lowe has been in the acting game since the 1980s. He got his start on screen in the ABC sitcom "A New Kind of Family" and quickly rose to fame following his role on the show. Rob was grouped in with Hollywood's "Brat Pack" of young actors, which included Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore, and Emilio Estevez, after starring in classic films like "The Outsiders," "St. Elmo's Fire," and "Square Dance."

Rob's career slowed slightly during the 1990s, but understandably so, as he welcomed two sons with wife Sheryl Berkoff: Matthew Edward and John Owen Lowe. After the births of his children, the actor balanced his career with his fatherly duties, and is arguably most known for his roles as Sam Seaborn in "The West Wing," which aired from 1999-2003 and Chris Traeger in the beloved NBC sitcom "Parks and Recreation."

Rob's children are grown up now, with John even following in his father's acting footsteps. He will join his famous dad in the Netflix comedy series, "Unstable," which hits the streamer on March 30.

Matthew Edward Lowe

Rob's first son was born on Sept. 24, 1993. According to People, Lowe decided to relocate to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles after his birth to keep his family out of the spotlight. "I moved my kids out of Los Angeles, immediately. I've lived in Santa Barbara for 20 years almost. I've had my picture taken there three times," he previously told the outlet.

Matthew grew up with different aspirations than his father's, going on to study history at Duke University, where he graduated in 2016, per his Linkedin. After obtaining his undergrad, Matthew attended Loyola Law School and worked as a law clerk before earning a degree in law in 2019. He currently works as the founder of LH Capital, "the family office of the Lowe and Hermes families," and a venture capital investor with Miroma Ventures.

Matthew joined his dad and younger brother, John, on screen in the 2017 docuseries "The Lowe Files," which followed the trio as they explored unsolved mysteries and supernatural locations.

Reflecting on the relationship with his dad, Matthew told People in 2022, "[Whether it's] me going off to college, or to law school, he's always the cheerleader... He's the first one to do absolutely anything to help you succeed."

John Owen Lowe

Lowe's second child, John Owen Lowe, was born on Nov. 6, 1995, per People. As a young adult, John attended Stanford University and wanted to have a career that separated him from his famous father. "The number of times I got compared to my dad, and the number of times he was brought up in conversation, made me so uncomfortable that I wanted to move as far away from that as possible," he revealed to Men's Health in March 2023.

During his journey of self-discovery, John was eventually drawn to acting, and made his on-screen debut with his dad in the Fox series "The Grinder" in 2015. Since then, John has appeared in "Holiday in the Wild" and additionally worked as a writer for "9-1-1: Lone Star." Most recently, he will star as Jackson Dragon, the son of Ellis Dragon (portrayed by Rob) in the Netflix comedy series "Unstable."
