What You Need to Remember About the First Season of Bloodline

Things get real sticky on Bloodline's debut season — and not just because of the Florida Keys' suffocatingly humid climate. The Netflix original series premiered last year to favorable criticism, mainly from a lot of Friday Night Lights fans who'd missed seeing Kyle Chandler on such a regular basis.

The dark series about one family's persistent drama features other killer performances from Ben Mendelsohn, Sissy Spacek, and Sam Shepard. Though Mendelsohn's tour de force portrayal of Danny Rayburn will surely be limited in the show's second season — dropping on Friday — new cast additions, like John Leguizamo and Andrea Riseborough, as well as mounting tension in the aftermath of Danny's death, are likely to keep things interesting.

In anticipation of the show's upcoming second season, here's everything you need to remember about what went down last season.

Danny Rayburn

Oh, Danny. After his return to the Keys, Danny proceeds to exploit and blackmail various members of his family. Throughout, Danny is also coming to terms with his father's abuse after the death of his sister, Sarah, as well as the way the entire Rayburn family essentially looked the other way.

After his exclusion from his father's will, Danny gets involved in a shady drug operation that both smuggles and oftentimes murders immigrants. He starts making a decent amount of money but is consistently seen mailing his checks to an undisclosed address, which will likely be explored further this coming season. At the end of the season, we also learn that Danny has a son before the Rayburn family's black sheep dies at the hands of his brother, John. This should be good.

Sally Rayburn

Sally Rayburn

The matriarch deals with the death of her spouse, as well as the return of Danny. She consistently stands up for Danny, even if that enrages her three other children. She also has a series of flashbacks to the day Sarah died and feels partly responsible. Apparently, Sally was planning on leaving Robert and the family that day and told Sarah to go hang out with Danny while she hurriedly gathered her belongings. It was then that Sarah went out on the boat with Danny and subsequently drowned.

Robert Rayburn

Robert Rayburn

Though Robert Rayburn dies early on in the season due to a heart condition, his presence continues to loom over the family. In the recurring flashbacks, we learn that Robert always favored Sarah and blames Danny for her death. Even the day before his death, Robert gives Danny a check in an effort to convince him to leave the Keys and never return.

John Rayburn

John Rayburn

As our narrator and central character — our very frazzled North Star, if you will — John sympathizes with Danny until he no longer can. As a local detective, John struggles with doing his job and protecting Danny and his various illegal activities. After many attempts to keep his family together, John cracks and forcibly drowns Danny during a heated argument.

Kevin Rayburn

Kevin Rayburn

Kevin is just a big ball of nerves. He's culpable for Danny's death in that he gives John a gun that he'll presumably use to kill Danny with — although that's not how things pan out. The youngest Rayburn son also exhibits an addiction to drugs and alcohol, which he struggles with as him and his estranged wife, Belle, consider getting a divorce. In the end, Kevin and Belle get back together as he tries to get his sh*t together.

Meg Rayburn

Meg Rayburn

Meg deals with a lot of relationship drama as she tries to maintain her relationship with her boyfriend-turned-fiancé, Marco, while also having an affair with her legal client, Alec. She subsequently tells Marco about the affair and the two break up. Meg is implicated in Danny's death because she hides his deceased body in her trunk as John and Kevin figure out what to do next. At the end of the season, she is living in New York after accepting a job offer that Alec helped coordinate.

Jane Rayburn

Jane Rayburn

John's daughter, Jane, is marginally involved in the family drama when Danny takes her out on the boat — without John's permission, of course — and gives her the same gold seahorse necklace that Sarah used to wear. Not cool.

Chelsea O'Bannon
Everett Collection

Chelsea O'Bannon

The sister to Danny's sketchy companion Eric O'Bannon, Chelsea becomes a surprisingly good friend for Danny. Though she makes the mistake of hooking up with Kevin one time, she's one of the only people to show Danny kindness — and she probably knows a lot more than we think.

Lenny Potts
Everett Collection

Lenny Potts

Lenny Potts might be one of the only honest people on this whole damn show. A former detective and friend of Robert's, Lenny harbors guilt over not advocating for Danny when Robert attacked him after Sarah's death. Not only is Lenny knowledgeable about the family's tumultuous history, but he's also doing his own detective work to discover the truth about Danny's death.
