Bates Motel Returns Tonight! Here's What You Need to Know

The show's executive producers confirmed at Comic-Con that Bates Motel will end after season five. "From the end of the first season, Carlton [Cuse] and I both had the exact same instinct of five seasons," said Kerry Ehrin. She confirmed that they have had a "specific" and "beautiful" ending in mind.

Norma (Farmiga) dies in season four, but she's still an integral part of the show — and its schizophrenic main character. "The final season of the show would really be Norman in his full-blown psycho pathology more like the character in the movie, but that doesn’t mean that Norma will not have a role," said Cuse at Comic-Con. "In fact, she has a huge role, but she’ll be Norman’s imagining of her."

The most surprising news to come out of the show's panel at Comic-Con was the announcement that Rihanna would be stepping in to play the iconic role of Marion Crane. If you've seen the original movie, you know Marion is the one who is stabbed to death in the shower during her stay at the motel. How did this happen? Cuse explained that once they found out she was a fan of the show, "we asked and she said yes. It was awesome. We’re really excited about it. It really feels very much like the version of the character that is different from the movie." Rihanna confirmed the news in a video:

For those who have been tuning into Bates Motel wondering how it would eventually connect to Psycho, this season will answer all your questions. "We are going to see a version of Norman that is much closer now to the one in the movie, but the way in which he acts and the events in the story will not be the same as the movie," Cuse said. "They will cross paths with some of the events in the movie and lead to an ultimate resolution. What that resolution is and how that plays out is something that will be not disconnected to the movie Psycho but will be very much our own story in the same way the entire series has been."

Nestor Carbonell (aka Alex Romero) has directed episodes of the show before, and he will return to direct episode five. Meanwhile, Freddie Highmore himself will direct episode eight, and Max Thieriot will direct episode four.
