We Finally Know Who Is Behind Each of the Clown Masks on American Horror Story: Cult

Along with scaring the crap out of viewers every week, American Horror Story: Cult also presented a fun little puzzle for its fans throughout the first handful of episodes: which characters are donning the clown suits every week and committing heinous acts of terror and murder around town? After the episode titled "Holes," we finally got some solid answers as to who makes up this roving band of killer Bozos. Don't worry, though — there are still several clowns we have yet to meet.

Kai = Trifaccia clown
FX

Kai = Trifaccia clown

In the episode one grocery store scene, Trifaccia clown seems like he's in charge, a feeling supported by the on-camera murder of Serena Belinda (Emma Roberts) in episode four, "11/9." In that attack, Trifaccia clown definitely seems to be running the show, just like Kai outside of the clown costumes. In the fifth episode, the Trifaccia clown takes off its mask, revealing that it is indeed Kai.

Harrison = Toothy clown
FX

Harrison = Toothy clown

This green-haired psycho is the tallest clown in the group, which is why he fits the bill for Harrison (Billy Eichner is 6'3"). Also, in the grocery store, this clown appears to be having sex with another male clown over the watermelon display, which also fits Harrison, who is gay.

Finally, Toothy clown is the third clown who murders Serena. It fits that Harrison and Meadow are recruited together and help commit that crime with Kai. We find out for sure in episode five that Harrison is definitely the one under all those holes.

Beverly = Satanist clown
FX

Beverly = Satanist clown

In episode four, Beverly is recruited as part of the cult following her being passed over for a promotion at work (which Serena Belinda receives instead, until she is brutally butchered while filming a segment . . . which Beverly is not really that broken up over). By the time the clowns are terrorizing Ivy, Beverly is totally part of the crew. The reason she has to be Satanist clown is because Satanist clown doesn't have any skin showing. If you could see her brown skin, it would be a dead giveaway that it is Beverly. Clever, clever, Ryan Murphy.

Later, it was confirmed this clown was Beverly in a preview for the fifth episode!

Winter = Painted Face clown
FX

Winter = Painted Face clown

You may have missed it, but during the attack on Rosie and her husband in episode three, a new, seemingly female clown appears in the background for a split second. This one is Winter because, remember, Winter couldn't have been in the Chang house because she was looking in the window with Ozzy. This clown wasn't there that night.

In the grotesque gimp scene in "Holes," we clearly see Winter take off this same clown mask. Her dress might be similar to the one Meadow wears, but don't be fooled!

Ivy = Elephant clown
FX

Ivy = Elephant clown

Yep, Ivy is in the cult! She pops up in episode five dressed in a red and white striped suit and elephant mask (subtle) and is literally sickened by Kai's decision to murder Bob (Dermot Mulroney) and his gimp (when she runs into a bathroom to puke, she takes off the mask).

R.J. = Harlequin clown
FX

R.J. = Harlequin clown

Although we first theorized that this clown might be Ivy given her predilection for wearing black and white stripes, it's finally revealed that Beverly's cameraman, R.J., is actually the man behind this clown mask. Unfortunately for him, his stint in the cult doesn't last long.

Detective Jack Samuels = Brainy clown
FX

Detective Jack Samuels = Brainy clown

Ah, yes. Brainy clown. We've been wondering about the identity of this clown ever since seeing him get it on in the produce section in the first episode, and now, four episodes later, we know it's Detective Jack Samuels (which makes sense, since he and Harrison clearly have something going on).

Meadow = Little Girl clown?
FX

Meadow = Little Girl clown?

The "11/9" episode is all about establishing what various characters were doing prior to the main storyline of the show (barring the premiere opening, set on election night). We find out that Harrison and Meadow are actually early Kai recruits . . . right before Trifaccia clown, Little Girl clown, and Toothy clown work together to murder Serena and her cameraman.

Little Girl clown looks to be about the right size and shape to be Meadow, so we assume it's her, but we still don't know for sure.

More to Come

In a season seven preview video, there is a group shot of the clowns. Five of them are ones we've seen already, but one of them has yet to appear on the show: the black-and-white Striped Pants clown in the foreground. Could it be Chaz Bono's character, the one-armed Trump supporter who is also in Kai's cult? Or maybe Dr. Rudy Vincent, Ally's two-faced therapist (who happens to be Winter and Kai's older brother)? We can't wait to find out.
