What I'm Listening to This Week: Lana Del Rey, Sophie Simmons, and Tyler, The Creator

Lana Del Rey recently covered one of my favorite Sublime songs (yes, I have a favorite Sublime song, more on that later), and in this edition of What I'm Listening to This Week, "Doin Time" is front and center. I had it on repeat all Memorial Day weekend along with Tyler, the Creator's new album IGOR, which I suspect I'll be playing well throughout the Summer. Here's what you should slam the play button on this week, and why.

"Doin Time" by Lana Del Rey

Growing up in Southern California, you basically had to listen to Sublime just to fit in — and nobody wanted to fit in more with the bland, basic white kids of my hometown more than I did! Anyway, Lana Del Rey recently updated one of my favorites, and I'm now convinced that she should do an entire Sublime cover album.

"Bigger Than Yours" by Sophie Simmons

As the daughter of legendary KISS frontman Gene Simmons and equally legendary Playboy model Shannon Tweed, Sophie Simmons naturally has good looks and a great set of pipes. I'm heavily f*cking with this self-confident breakup bop.

"Henny" by Benny Mayne

As someone who doesn't drink Hennessey, I sure listen to a lot of songs about drinking Hennessey! This groove from Toronto artist Benny Mayne is a recent fave.

"Sun of Jean" by Loyle Carner

The 24-year-old London rapper released this sweet ode to his mother back in 2017, but as British hip-hop is one of my (many) recent obsessions, I only discovered it recently. Don't worry — it will make you want to call your mom.

"If I Were You" by Claud

Much like Del Rey's Sublime cover, this song from Brooklyn singer Claud takes me back to the days of driving around with friends during Summer vacation, looking for something to do (just to end up like, walking around Target or going to In N' Out or something).

IGOR by Tyler, The Creator

IGOR by Tyler, The Creator

Tyler, the Creator really bares his soul on IGOR, which he produced and arranged himself. The 40-minute album features the likes of Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Solange, and Santigold, and is perfect for listening to with a joint in one hand and a Rosé in the other.

Standout track: Unfortunately I was not able to pick a favorite, but I did narrow it down to three: "New Magic Wand," "Puppet," and "I Don't Love You Anymore."
