Netflix is reimagining the classic story of Pinocchio in an upcoming stop-motion musical. The teaser trailer, which arrived on Jan. 24, gives us a glimpse of the Guillermo del Toro-directed film from the point of view of Sebastian J. Cricket — aka Jiminy Cricket — who lives inside the wooden puppet. In the clip, Sebastian makes it clear that this version of Pinocchio is not at all the story we're all familiar with.
"I want to tell you a story. It's a story you may think you know, but you don't," he says. Netflix's Pinocchio — which del Toro has been working on for over a decade — is based on the original 1883 Italian tale written by Carlo Collodi, which Disney revamped in 1940 with its own animated movie. In 2008, del Toro announced his plans to develop a stop-motion animated movie based on Collodi's classic, but over the years, he struggled to find funding for it and was forced to switch studios multiple times.
Finally, the film has found a home at Netflix, and viewers can't wait to see del Toro's finished product. Pinocchio arrives on the streaming platform in December of this year. Watch the first-look trailer above.
