The Most Heartbreaking Pixar Moments, Ranked From "I SOBBED" to "That Made Me Tear Up"

I was 5 years old when the first Pixar movie came around and changed my life played with my feelings. Over 20 years later, and I still brace myself emotionally for every new Disney/Pixar release and, let's be honest, to rewatch my favorites that I know leave me sobbing every time. After seeing Coco for the first time (and subsequently watching it again every night for the next week because I'm a glutton for punishment) I decided to ask around and find out which Pixar movie moment caused people to lose their will to live.

Sure, Pixar movies are mostly created with kids in mind, but those writers know how to reach the minds and hearts of people of all ages; arguably, adults more than anyone. Ahead, find the saddest Pixar scenes ranked from "I SOBBED MY DAMN HEART OUT" to "Yep, This Definitely Made Me Tear Up."

Coco: When Miguel Sings "Remember Me" to Mama Coco

"I bawled at the end when Miguel sings "Remember Me" to Mama Coco and she starts singing with him, and then talks lovingly about her father, and how he used to sing to her. I cried again when Miguel is holding his new baby sister and showing her the ofrenda, and you see Mama Coco's photo." — Jenny

"I held it together through most of Coco, but completely dissolved into a blubbering mess when Miguel came back from the land of the dead to sing "Remember Me" to his Mama Coco. Just seeing her light up remembering her papa was so moving — such a powerful scene for those who have family members struggling with dementia." — Angela

"I somehow ended up watching Coco with my roommate's boyfriend, and both of us were strenuously trying not to cry in front of each other. When Mama Coco finally gets to talk about her dad with Miguel, we were suspiciously quiet and staring very hard at the TV without blinking." — Rachel

"When the grandma finally sees her dad in the picture and starts singing "Remember Me" again! I started bawling because it shows the significance of family ties and the importance of keeping your family history alive." — Fabiola

"I honestly was so far gone by this point in the movie that I was shaking with sobs and wondering why I decided to watch it alone. My eyes were abnormally puffy for at least three days after." — Alessia

"Excuse me, every scene in Coco, especially this one, made me tear up a little bit because I'm human." — Mekishana

Toy Story 3: When Andy Says His Final Goodbye to His Toys

"The scene where Andy says goodbye to his toys in Toy Story 3 always chokes me up! We spend our babies' early days wishing they would grow up so we can talk to them and play with them, but then suddenly they're 10 years old and shunning their 'baby' toys, and before you know it, they're going to be heading off to college like Andy. The scene rang so true and just always brings a tear to my eye (or full-on waterworks if the kids aren't watching me!)." — Rebecca

"Toy Story 3 came out while I was in college, so nothing hit home harder for me than watching Andy say goodbye to his toys. I grew up at the same time as Andy and knew exactly what he was going through, as I had cleaned out my room bit by bit over the last couple years before the film premiered. When Woody says, 'So long, partner,' I just about died." — Alessia

"Toy Story 3 came out right when I graduated high school. I saw it with my mom, and we both cried in the theater because I was Andy going away for college and leaving my family and friends. I feel like everyone who reached a milestone that year probably did the same." — Rachel

Up: The 3-Minute Montage of Carl and Ellie's Relationship

"OMG, I sobbed my heart out over the first 15 minutes of Up, and I am not usually a crier. Their life together and all their hardships and how Ellie pushes him to move forward . . . that was manipulative AF on Pixar's part, honestly, but so sweet. I conned my roommate into watching it for the first time last year and excused myself for the first few minutes so she could experience it herself." — Rachel

"The opening of Up has me crying every time I see it. Seeing a lifelong love story, with all the happiness, sadness, and aging condensed into something like three minutes, brings on the waterworks and makes me want to hold hands with my husband (something I am not really prone to do). Just hearing the music used in that scene (my daughter recently learned it on the piano and practiced, and practiced) makes me tear up." — Susi

"Honestly, it takes about 2.5 notes from the Up song for me to start getting choked up. Yeah, that's about it." — Laura

Toy Story 3: When the Toys Hold Hands as They Sink Into the Incinerator

"With absolutely zero exaggeration — the first time I saw this scene was the hardest I've ever cried in my entire life. Because I was Andy's age when the first Toy Story came out, I felt a strong connection to Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the gang. The way they love and take care of each other is evident throughout the series, but never more so than when they all realize their doomed fate in the fiery incinerator. When Woody finally grabbed Buzz's hand and the scene panned out to the fire and the chain of linked toys, I thought my eyes were going to fall out." — Alessia

"I openly wept during the Toy Story 3 scene when the toys just accept their death, which is incredibly traumatizing and how dare they put that in a children's movie, but was also just so deep. When they realize they have no way of escaping and start linking hands, I genuinely wondered if this was truly how my childhood would be coming to an end. Yes, I was a legal adult, but I still had some semblance of happiness from my childhood movies, and Pixar was really about to wreck it! I'm still scarred by that scene and haven't rewatched it since." — Mekishana

Monsters, Inc.: When Sully Says Goodbye to Boo

"As soon as Roz said 'bring me the door shredder,' I lost my cool. Then, Boo got all excited and started showing Sully all of her toys — AS. IF. HE. COULD. STAY. AND. PLAY. UGH. The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., I thought that Sully's little goodbye speech had broken my whole damn heart for good, but when Boo got out of her bed and opened the door to reveal her normal closet, I lost the will to live." — Alessia

Finding Dory: When Dory Finally Finds Her Parents

"I don't know what's in the water at Pixar studios, but they have found the secret formula to creating the most heartbreaking scenes in cinematic history — quote me. When it is revealed in Finding Dory that Dory's parents had been looking for her for years, setting out a path of shells for her to find her way back to them like they did for her when she was younger, I don't think I've ever cried harder. Or prouder." — Charisandra

Coco: When Héctor Reveals How He Died

"Given the fact that the entire movie is about The Day of the Dead, there are a number of sad moments that tugged at my heartstrings. BUT, one of the saddest was when Miguel learned how Héctor died. Couple that with the revelation that he's actually Miguel's long-lost great-great-grandfather, meaning that his own family was responsible for Héctor beginning to be forgotten, and I was sobbing." — Murphy Moroney, assistant editor, Moms

WALL-E: When WALL-E Gets Crushed

"First of all, let me just come out and say that WALL-E is actually my favorite Pixar movie and nothing else has topped it. Now that you're all done judging me, I can reveal that I openly sobbed when WALL-E was crushed in the Holo-Detector chamber. I was ready to fight every single animated character because he was so good and so pure, and they crushed him. Of course, my girl EVE came through in the clutch, but I still had tears to cry when she realized that his personality and memory had been reset and thought it was over for them. That kiss of life almost killed me, to be quite honest with you." — Mekishana

Coco: When Héctor Sings to Young Coco

"So I have no feelings and never cry at ANYTHING but when I first started dating my boyfriend (like third date), he made me watch Coco with him. He told me that if I didn't cry during the scene where the dad sings baby Coco 'Remember Me,' it would be a dealbreaker. I was fully expecting to leave the date single BUT! Holy hell. Cue the waterworks. I sobbed harder at that scene than I ever have at any of my own emotional life events. Great thing I wasn't wearing waterproof mascara." — Alaina Demopolous, junior writer, Beauty
