Michelle Yeoh's Oscar Win Is a Love Letter to Moms Everywhere

Michelle Yeoh just took home the Academy Award for best actress for her starring role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," and her acceptance speech stuck a chord for many — especially mothers.

"I have to dedicate this to my mom, all the moms in the world, because they are really the superheroes, and without them, none of us will be here tonight," she said in her acceptance speech. "She's 84, and I'm taking this home to her. She's watching right now in Malaysia with my family and friends. I love you guys. I'm bringing this home to you."

"It was time that we gave this voice to our mothers and let them fly to the skies like heroes."

Fans of the movie have been sharing their love for Yeoh, her speech, and her role in the film on social media. "In everything 'Everything Everywhere All At Once,' when Michelle Yeoh says, 'No matter what, I still want to be here with you. I will always, always, want to be here with you' I missed my mom so bad I cried until after the credits ended," one Twitter user wrote. Another user quoted the part of Yeoh's speech calling moms superheroes, adding, "Carrying out almost 75% of #UnpaidCareWork in the world, we certainly are."

Yeoh's speech wasn't the first time at the 2023 Oscars that she gave a shout-out to mothers. While on the red carpet, ABC Oscars preshow host Vanessa Hudgens asked Yeoh: "You play a character that is a normal person who becomes a superhero. What was it that drew you to this character? Why did you have to do this?"

Yeoh responded: "Oh my god, it's because all our mothers are sometimes so overlooked, and this was the perfect opportunity to show that moms are superheroes," she said. "They have the superpowers of love and kindness and compassion, and it was time that we gave this voice to our mothers and let them fly to the skies like heroes."
