22 Winter Outerwear Trends to Learn From Stockholm Street Style

Adam Katz Sinding

Stockholm Fashion Week returned digitally for the fall 2021 season, and the street style is not unlike what we expect to see in New York, London, Milan, and Paris as designers show their new collections. Even though runways and lookbooks are being unveiled mostly via virtual platforms, fresh fashion puts us all in the mood to step outside and dress up, especially for those who do plan to attend a socially distanced event or two. (Stay safe out there!)

In Stockholm, Sweden we saw three days worth of seriously solid outerwear moments from the fashion crowd, and we gleaned plenty of unexpected tips and tricks for styling our coats through the rest of the cold, wintry months. Scroll down to get inspired by these carefully considered ideas, and allow yourself to dream up new ways to wear the bombers, trenches, and fuzzy jackets you've likely been relying on to make a statement for grocery runs and walks around the block.

Layer a snow-white wool coat over printed pajamas and style with loafers, and you'll look chic as can be.

Always play with textures — think: denim with a furry coat and dark-wash waxed jeans with a neutral wool. It's all about mixing and matching for achieving that multidimensional look.

Double up on puffers – your puffer coat will look great teamed up with a quilted puff tote bag.

Pull the sleeves of your sweatshirt out through your jacket to achieve a streamlined outerwear look, consistent in color.

Allow your scarf to be the center of attention when you wrap it multiple times around your neck and "bundle up." The look is cozy, but statement making, especially when your Acne Studio scarf comes in rainbow check.

Wear a whimsical pastel pattern with a graphic-print graffiti bag and revel in the edgy juxtaposition of the look.

Wear a cable-knit sweater with a long felt coat to amp up the wintry vibes.

Try contrasting your fuzzy bucket hat with a leather jacket for a fun Western-inspired look.

Team up a midlength quilted jacket with a chunky combat boot that hits just above the ankle.

Wear one thicker, open coat over another of a slightly different length, fabric, and color.

Get creative with your proportions — a cropped electric green bomber looks so cool over a longer-length plaid scarf.

Accent an all-black outfit with a bright bag and a matching shirt in a more muted tone.

Contrast a ladylike, formfitting jacket with tough, functional boots.

This goes without saying, but if you're stepping out in colorful layers, so is your pup.

Stay warm in a crisp-cut, lightweight jacket with a thick turtleneck underneath — it's like your secret weapon!

Cinch your puffer coat to flatter your figure and let a striking over-the-knee boot peek out in a contrasting color.

Layer a sporty hoodie over a beautiful lace dress, and top it off with a blazer to add structure. Allow your pieces to meet in perfect harmony.

Go for the Bernie vibe and try youthful, fair-isle patterned gloves with a beautiful blue coat and some statement fashion accessories.

Don't underestimate the power of a brooch on the lapel of your wool coat. It makes an otherwise simple outfit seem considered.

Match your head wear — your beanie, your glasses — to the shearling collar of your coat.

Wear a long shirtdress open underneath a sweater, and top it off with a long leather trench of the same length.

Go for outerwear in shades like taupe, oatmeal, and ivory, and introduce a touch of leopard to tie them together in the form of a bag or a hat.
