I have the type of relationship with my flannel shirt that you might have with your UGG boots. No matter the season, I'm always finding an excuse to wear mine. It's soft, as comfortable as PJs, and can be styled up or down — to wear out, or to lounge around the house. While oversize plaids have strong ties to the '90s, and some of the best flannel outfits did, in fact, come from that time — still recreated to this day — there are movie moments through the years that prove the trend's staying power, too.

Tai wears her flannel tied around the waist with a biker short workout set in Clueless. Hallie and Annie rock their checked throwovers with bandana neck-ties for the end-of-summer family hiking trip in The Parent Trap. There are lesser known flannel movie moments, of course, that have probably slipped your mind. You'll be surprised to find how enthusiastic you are about creating an outfit around your plaid shirt once you reminisce about all the screen style moments ahead.

Scroll down to find eight plaids I consider to be iconic, then shop the essentials I use to show my dedication to flannel fashion in film.

The Parent Trap

Add outdoorsy accessories like a bandana tied around your neck, just as Hallie and Annie do.

The Mighty Ducks

Connie wears the coziest 2-in-1 flannel/hoodie in The Mighty Ducks, and I'll always be so into her sporty-meets-rugged look.

Clueless

Clueless

The ultimate '90s combination? Tai's biker shorts set and a flannel tied around the waist.

The Descendants

I love Alexandra's bohemian take on a fitted flannel with distressed jeans. The look is relaxed with the addition of a leather hobo bag, but also still feels put together.

Blue Valentine

Blue Valentine

Michelle Williams plays Cindy in 2010's Blue Valentine, who somehow manages to pull off a red checkered shirt with a knee-length denim skirt and lug sole boots. Come to think of it, though, I love the off-duty appeal of a buttoned-up, untucked plaid with a touch of denim.

American Ultra

American Ultra

Who can forget Mike and Phoebe's matching flannels in 2015's American Ultra? K-Stew and Jesse Eisenberg both rock the oversize, open flannel and plain tee look.

Wayne's World

Wayne's World

Dana Carvey wears everyone's go-to, stay home outfit in Wayne's World as Garth. I mean, this is the kind of combination you can wear days on end without stepping outside (or touching your contact lens case).

Out of the Furnace

Out of the Furnace

Perhaps a lesser-recognized flannel moment, Zoe Saldana offers us jewelry recommendations for a plaid shirt as Lena in 2013's Out of the Furnace. I still like to give mine beachy vibes with some beaded bracelets.
