Here's How Much Wine You Should Drink If You Want to Be Healthy

Whenever I have a glass of red wine, I enjoy it even more because I know that I am reaping health benefits with each sip. As with everything, moderation is key, and drinking more than one glass a day can tip the balance and be detrimental to your health. Here are five reasons to stop after having just one glass of wine.

  1. One glass of wine a day can reduce you risk of having a heart attack by lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) levels, but two glasses of wine a day increases your chance of developing breast cancer.
  2. One glass of wine a day can increase bone strength, but two or more glasses daily can weaken bones. This decrease in bone density can put you at risk for developing osteoporosis.
  3. One glass of red wine a day may help you stay thin by blocking fat cell formation, but two or more glasses a day may raise the fats found in your blood.
  4. Drinking wine in moderation may help improve your ability to create and maintain memories, but two or more glasses, especially when coupled with tobacco use, can hasten the onset of Alzheimer's.
  5. Drinking one glass of wine a day can lower your chances of having a stroke, but drinking more can raise your chances of having one.

If you use the health benefits of wine to justify or rationalize having a glass, stick to one four-ounce glass. Moderation is key when it comes to drinking alcohol. A little bit does the trick, but a little more than that can be risky.

I love merlot, so it's nice to know it's healthy in moderation. I have a glass of merlot once or twice a week with dinner. 8)

I am a teetotaler, so this debate doesn't pertain to me as much. The few times I have drank any alcoholic beverage, I ended up with a severe katzenjammer the following day. That coupled with the fact that my father is a recovered alcoholic is enough to dissuade me from consuming any more wine, liquor, etc.

WHY does life have to torture me like this?? Wine is soo good, and my family is italian and makes their own, so I can't stop at one glass. But the first reason alone is enough to make me think I should, as I'm at risk from my parents for both heart disease and breast cancer!

actually white wine CAN have some of the same benefits as red, because white wine can be made from colored grapes. what is added to the red wine is that the skin is allowed to settle in the "juice" so that its color rubs off. the flesh from the grape is used for both wines. also, red wines just tend to be fermented for a longer amount of time, which might cause the benefits? the alocohol levels however a pretty much the same in both types.

If I don't stop at one glass, I get drunk! I'm such a lightweight, I can't even tolerate two glasses of wine. One is just perfect for me and creates a nice buzz.

The thing to notice here is that this is discussing one glass of one PER DAY versus two glasses of wine PER DAY. The way I see it, there's nothing wrong with celebrating your Friday with three or four glasses of wine, if you're not drinking on other days of the week, because that still averages out to less than one glass per day. While I can't speak for the level of fats in your blood, as a cancer researcher, I can tell you that drinking all your wine on one day of the week versus doling it out over the week won't change the chances of getting breast cancer.

I love it kgtg1 and Tami715!!! I know everything in moderation is best. But it just sounds unbelievable to me that one glass is GOOD for you and two glasses is BAD for you. Where is the middle ground?

Hmmm... well the wine glasses I use at home hold half a bottle, so I think I'll stick to my usual 2 glasses :D
