While the days of celebratory post-soccer-game granola bars may be long gone, our love for a good portable snack has only matured as we've aged. These days we reach for healthy options that we can stash in our desk drawer for those days when the morning meeting drags on through lunch, like high-protein varieties that keep us fueled for whatever the day has in store. With more and more bar options hitting store shelves, we wanted to test out some of the newer options that tout the healthiest claims to see which ones are right for us.

Amazing Grass Green Superfood Energy Bars

Amazing Grass Green Superfood Energy Bars

Pros: Organic, vegan, raw, gluten-free, high in protein (10g)

Cons: The chocolate peanut butter version we sampled tasted pretty . . . green. If you're accustomed to green juices or wheat grass, this might not be an issue for you, but if you're hoping to trick yourself into eating healthy, this bar isn't for you.

Bobo's Oat Bar

Bobo's Oat Bar

Pros: Dairy-free, non-GMO, kid-friendly

Cons: Only 3 grams of protein per serving, two servings per bar (and who only eats half of a bar?).

This bar is yummy and simple, and is a great stand-in for a bowl of oatmeal or a quick pre-workout carbo load.

EXO Protein Bar

EXO Protein Bar

Pros: Gluten-free, high in protein (10g)

Cons: Those 10 grams of protein are derived from crickets (yup, the bug), which is a bit off-putting for some. Our taste-testers generally liked the PB & J flavor in our blind taste test (read: we didn't tell them the main ingredient), but some are still holding a grudge since we tricked them into eating bugs. If you're an adventurous eater looking for a nutrient-dense option in novel flavors, the EXO bar is definitely worth a try.

Health Warrior Chia Bars

Health Warrior Chia Bars

Pros: Gluten-free, soy-free, vegan

Cons: At just 100 calories, these chia seed based bars are definitely the smallest on our list and are best suited for a small snack rather than a meal replacement or workout fuel. Reviewers raved about the taste, making these a great option for a midafternoon snack when you're tempted by the vending machine.

NuGo Protein Bars

NuGo Protein Bars

Pros: Gluten-free, vegan, organic options available, high in protein (10g)

Cons: With 15 grams of sugar, these protein bars are on the higher side of sugar content among the bars we sampled.

We especially loved the chocolate pretzel flavor, with real flakes of sea salt sprinkled on top for a sweet and salty flavor combo that made these pretty delicious.

Perfect Bar

Perfect Bar

Pros: Organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free, high in protein, Paleo, vegan options available

Cons: These bars are so fresh they require refrigeration, so they're not ideal for stashing in your purse indefinitely.

At 330 calories, Perfect Bar is a great meal replacement option, boasting 16 grams of protein (the highest in our roundup). We sampled all flavors and found them to be the best tasting of the brands we tried. The bars have a peanut butter base, so if you're a PB lover (raises hand), these can pretty much pass as candy bars. With over 20 superfoods snuck into the ingredient list, though, you don't have to feel bad about it.

Primal Kitchen

Primal Kitchen

Pros: Gluten-free, Paleo, soy-free, high in protein (15g)

Cons: Several reviewers found these bars too hard or too difficult to chew, so you may want to steer clear if you've got fragile dental work. Primal Kitchen boasts "grass-fed collagen" (from Brazilian cows) as their innovative ingredient, which has been reported to boost healthy tissue repair. A good choice for the CrossFitting Paleo enthusiast in your life.

Pure Organic Ancient Grains

Pure Organic Ancient Grains

Pros: Organic, gluten-free, vegan, soy-free, non-GMO

Cons: With only 5 grams of protein, these grain-based bars aren't a great fit for the low carb lifestyle. Reviewers loved the taste of the peanut butter chocolate flavor, though, and this is certainly the quickest way to get your daily dose of quinoa and amaranth.

Whatever your on-the-go nutrition needs may be, there's a bar for that. But don't just take our word for it, sample them all and let us know what your favorites are.
