California has its burritos, Louisiana has gumbo, Massachusetts has chowder, and New York has pizza. Those who live in Manhattan have the advantage of knowing exactly where to score the best slices. Now this list by no means covers every single delicious location the city has to offer its inhabitants, but it definitely nods to the iconic go-tos.

Please note the cardinal rules of consuming New York slices: pay in cash, expect it on a grease-stained paper plate, eat while standing, and consume in under five minutes.

Artichoke Basille's Pizza

Artichoke Basille's Pizza

Locations: East Village, Chelsea, and Greenwich Village
Pro tip: Go with what it's famous for, the creamy artichoke. This slice was probably the most overwhelming of the bunch because it was honestly so huge. The crust itself is relatively thick for New York pizza and pretty doughy. Although it was on the greasy side, the flavor of the cheese surpassed all the other slices. It was definitely something to write home about.

Prince Street Pizza

Prince Street Pizza

Location: SoHo
Pro tip: Order the pepperoni squares, and get extra crispy. The pepperoni is spicy and nice and crispy, an element I often find overlooked at other pizza places.

Sal and Carmine

Sal and Carmine

Location: Upper West Side
Pro tip: Sal and Carmine is an Upper West Side legend and staple among those who inhabit the area. Go for the spinach slice. The spinach seemed to be pureed within the cheese, then melted all together when baked. Divine.

Bleeker Street Pizza

Location: West Village
Pro tip: The Nonna Maria is the way to go if you find yourself at Bleeker Street Pizza. The crust is thin with a little crisp to it, and the added basil just gives the slice so much flavor. The awesome thing about Bleeker Street Pizza is the slices are not greasy compared to other spots yet there's no sacrifice of flavor or savoriness because of this.

Joe's Pizza

Joe's Pizza

Locations: West Village, Chelsea, Brooklyn
Pro tip: Truly the best slice of pizza in the bunch, and I think it's because of the simplicity. There is nothing complicated or fussy about its pizza. You get exactly what you hope for when you visit New York City. A crispy, thin slice of pizza with cheese dripping off the slice. Expect all the classic NYC pizza parlor staples: cash only, pictures of celebrities who have visited hanging on the wall, slices served on a paper plate, and no seating inside, only a standing area to eat and run.
