The 1 Place In Your Home You Should Never Forget to Organize

Organizing is often something that falls by the wayside in our busy lives — who has time to fold things, let alone iron them? But if you want domestic bliss to reign in your household, you should definitely keep your linen closet clean and in tip-top shape, according to Vicki Fulop, co-founder of Brooklinen, a consumer website that brings you soft, swoon-worthy premium hotel-quality sheets at an affordable price. Here, she explains how you can start fresh with your linen closet — which might just kick off a little (super) early spring cleaning!

Purge Anything Old, Tattered, or Unused

“A beautiful linen closet starts with tossing (or rather, donating & repurposing) all of the tattered and mismatched linens and towels that might have accumulated over time,” says Fulop. “Basically, to paraphrase Marie Kondo, you want to KonMari that shiz so you're only left with the items that spark joy (like a beautiful, crisp set of sheets that make you want to dive into bed immediately, versus ones those ratty ones hanging on by a thread since college . . . their time has come). You can donate the old stuff to a local Goodwill or animal shelter — we do that with our returns — they are always in need of old bedding for various uses!”

It might sound obvious, but we’ve all been there: waiting for your only pair of sheets to come out of the dryer at midnight on a Tuesday is just no fun. “You want to end up with two or three sets of sheets (per bed) and towels (per person),” says Fulop. “This gives you one set in use, one in the hamper, and one in the closet, just in case.”

“Now that you're rid of the stuff you had to toss, figure out how you'd like to group your remaining sheets, towels, pillows, comforters, etc,” she suggests. “A good guideline is to sort by set and then size and season. Also, if you're still tight on space, figure out if there's anything you can relocate to another room (i.e., move dish towels to a cabinet or drawer in the kitchen) and keep the random things that ended up in your linen closet (just me?) in clear, labeled plastic bins under your bed).”

Keeping things nice and neat is only half the battle — you need to keep them in the right place, too, for easy access. “You'll want to map out your closet and keep the items you use most at eye level, and more seasonal items such as extra blankets, beach towels, fancy cloth napkins, and more further up and down,” advises Fulop.

If you’re wondering how to grow the space in your linen closet, listen up: “Add towel bars to the door so you can hang a few, buy shelf risers and/or dividers if your shelves aren't adjustable, get a pretty bin or basket to corral your laundry care products, and use an office file sorter to neatly organize and stack rolled washcloths and dishtowels,” she suggests.

Get re-acquainted with that label maker! “Label your shelves so that everything has its place and you and your family always know where everything goes,” suggests Fulop. That might mean dividing it by room, color or season depending on your preferences.

Fulop also suggests that there more ways to keep everything organized and bundled together. “You can also keep sheet sets inside pillowcases, so that matching sets are always together and easy to grab. Additionally, roll your towels to make them easier to grab and less likely to bunch and hang over the edge of the shelf.”

“Learning to fold a fitted sheet into a perfect square is surprisingly easy and satisfying and helps you get pretty, symmetrical sheet stacks!”

“Do a closet audit seasonally (see step one) and live by the one-in one-out rule,” says Fulop. “It will help keep your linen closet spic and span!”
