Get Your Super Bowl Fiesta Ready With These Mojito Recipes

Super Bowl 2020 will take place in Miami, which means most likely every celebration will have a little bit of Latin culture embedded. And how could it not? Miami is the US metropolis with the largest percentage of foreign-born residents — close to 51 percent of the population — and out of its approximately 2.5 million inhabitants, 70 percent of the population is Hispanic or of Hispanic descent, with Spanish being spoken almost everywhere.

It also doesn't come as a surprise that this year's halftime show will be led by two of the best representatives of Latin music: Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. Both women will have the responsibility of delivering a show that will fuse their Latinx backgrounds with a more mainstream sound, which both of them have been doing successfully since they began their careers.

With all this Latin influence surrounding the big game, you'll want to extend it to your watch party. There's no better way to do that than with a mojito. The history of the mojito is a bit blurry. Some think they trace back to precolonial times, when the Cuban natives used aguardiente de caña (a crude form of rum made from sugar cane) mixed with mint, lime, and sugar-cane syrup to treat illnesses. Word of mouth says that when the pirates arrived in Cuba, they promptly used rum, and the mojito as we know it was born.

The drink gained popularity thanks to Ernest Hemingway, who drank it during his time in Cuba, and after a few honorable mentions in movies, people were sold. Celebrating the Super Bowl with mojitos is a nice way to acknowledge all the hard work Cubans put in to make Miami the city it is today. As of 2012, there were 1.2 million Cubans living in Miami, a lot of whom arrived after the Cuban revolution.

Most of them were business people and professionals who used their expertise to help the city thrive, and they, along with their children and grandchildren, are now American citizens who also enjoy football and will be watching the game on Sunday. If you think about it, that's what this country is all about: a mix of cultures, traditions, and customs that find a way of blending well together.
