For Very Fair Skin

The best hair color: "Hair colors for this skin can be lighter. Platinum blond, white blond, or light brown look great against your fair complexion," Samra said.

How to ask for this look at the salon: Your colorist should figure out the undertones of your skin before reaching for the dye. Here are the basic rules:

For warm undertones: Go for shades like ginger, golden light blond, mahogany, or a balayage combination of dark blond with golden highlights.

For cool undertones: Go for platinum blond, light ash blond, or light coffee brown.

The best hair color: "Your skin tone allows for versatility. You can actually choose from a very wide range of hair colors, from black to red, and you will still look good," Samra said.

How to ask for this look at the salon: Your eye color can help determine the right shade for you.

If your eyes are dark brown, black, or hazel color: Go with black, medium brown, or golden brown hair. A wine or auburn color would also enhance your natural undertones.

If your eyes are hazel, blue, or green and your natural hair color is light brown to medium blond: Ask to have light or golden highlights added in, or choose a medium brunette color on the warm side.

If your eyes are blue or green and you have naturally blond hair: Stay with golden blonds and very light brunette shades. Vivid red tones and warm reds will work well for you also.

The best hair color: "This skin tone can stand against a deep, rich brown or an earthy color. Add some strategically placed highlights in a subtle gold or honey, if you want to create depth," Samra said.

How to ask for this look at the salon: You have a bit of freedom and range of color, but you still have to keep some things in mind.

If you're going for brown hues: Pretty much every shade of brown will look good on you. Ask your colorist to help you choose a color based on the natural hair color that you have now. The possibilities are almost endless.

If you're going for blond hues: Blond hair dye and its shades are the most common and by far the most flattering for both cool skin and warm skin tones. If this is the route you're going, ask for golden blond shades. These colors will make the face appear less green and actually look warmer, younger, and healthy.

If you're going for red hues: Choose very carefully, especially if you have cool undertones. Ask your colorist to work red color with cooper, mahogany, and red browns.

For Dark Complexions

The best hair color: "If your hair color is too close to your skin tone, your features will disappear. Deep, dark tones of espresso and inky black look striking next to dark complexions," Samra said.

How to ask for this look at the salon: Ask for maple brown, mahogany, or toffee to bring out the apricot undertones in your skin.
