This Mom Made Her Daughter a Replica of the Dress From Crazy Rich Asians For 1 Heartwarming Reason

Ha Truong, a mom of two from Miami, has been patiently waiting for Crazy Rich Asians to hit theaters. In fact, she was so excited for the first movie with an all-Asian cast to be made in 25 years that she celebrated by making her 5-year-old daughter Olivia a replica of the dress Constance Wu wears in the movie's trailer. She posted the results to Instagram — and her phone immediately began blowing up with "like" after "like."

The dedicated mama used eight yards of tulle to make the dress in just two hours. And while Ha doesn't claim to be an expert sewer by any means, she said it was a big moment for her as a Vietnamese-American — and she wanted Olivia to get in on the fun ASAP.

"Being an Asian-American, oftentimes you don't 'see' that Asian part of yourself in America, and neither do your peers," Ha told POPSUGAR. "Crazy Rich Asians is proof — hope — that representation matters. It's refreshing to see someone on the big screen my daughter and son can relate to."

As soon as Ha was done with the costume, Olivia's eyes totally lit up. She immediately beelined to the mirror to get a better look and do a twirl or two. The look on her daughter's face made Ha especially proud of her heritage. She hopes that by sharing Olivia's story, more underrepresented groups will get their chance in the spotlight.

"Movies like this show we are part of the global fabric," explained Ha. "Our stories need to be shared, much like the stories of any misrepresented group."

Eventually, Constance Wu caught wind of Ha's post and shared it on Instagram the day Crazy Rich Asians hit theaters with the caption: "Possibility. That's what seeing yourself reflected in stories gives you. Love this girl."

Constance's post hit home with Ha. "This is part of my children's story," said Ha. "I don't want them to lose that part of them. I want them to know where they came from, for the people they grow up to be and for who they see in current events."
