Officer Calms Down a Young Black Girl Who Was Scared After He Pulled Over Her Dad

During a routine traffic stop in Dallas, a police officer showed kindness to a man's young daughter who was scared the officer might hurt her dad in light of the recent police shootings of black men. On Aug. 10, Michael Harris was pulled over and told officers that he was carrying a concealed weapon with a permit to do so. When Harris informed the officer he was armed, his 7-year-old daughter, Mikylie, awoke from a nap and "came out of the back crying and freaking out," according to ABC News.

"Right after the Dallas shootings happened, she asked me, 'Daddy why are the white people and black people killing each other?' I didn't know what to say," Harris told ABC News.

The officer, Mike Collins, recognized Mikylie's fear and calmed her down by giving her a sticker and letting her play in the patrol car. Concerned about Mikylie's perception of police, Collins told ABC, he "didn't want her to feel that way about police." Although he received a ticket, Harris was moved by the interaction and shared his story on Facebook. Teaching his daughter that police officers are not threatening was worth the ticket, he added.

Collins was just as touched by the interaction, saying, "It was priceless. Hearing 'Thank you for doing your job' meant so much."
