The Most Painful (and Racist) Part of President Trump's Press Conference

President Donald Trump hosted what's possibly the most ridiculous press conference in American history on Thursday. There were several confounding moments during the hour-long fiasco, but one stood out as particularly out of touch. When April Ryan, the Washington bureau chief for the American Urban Radio Networks, asked the president if he planned to include the Black Congressional Caucus (CBC) in conversations about his plan to "fix" inner cities, he first asked what the CBC is. Once she clarified, he asked if she knows them.

Trump just asked a black journalist if she was "friends" with the Congressional Black Caucus and wanted to set up a mtg for him w/ the CBC. pic.twitter.com/whnDJLI8MI

"Are you going to include the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus?" Ryan asked before being interrupted by the president. "Well, I would. Tell you what," Trump retorted. "Do you want to set up the meeting? Are they friends of yours?"

It's apparent from Trump's interjections that not only does he believe Ryan is connected to the CBC simply based on her skin color, but that he might not even know what the CBC is. Ryan first said "the CBC," which Trump didn't seem to understand. It's only after Ryan said that the CBC is the Congressional Black Caucus that Trump asked her if she she can facilitate a meeting.

What's more, the CBC claims it reached out to Trump's office and received no response. Ryan shared the CBC's clapback on Twitter.

Apparently, the Congressional Black Caucus send a request to meet with the president and they did not get a response. https://t.co/zMYTKmjBob

Hi, @realDonaldTrump. We're the CBC. We sent you a letter on January 19, but you never wrote us back. Sad! Letter: https://t.co/58KiuHmITF

This is not the first time Trump has demonstrated his ignorance of black history. Earlier this month, during a press conference celebrating Black History Month, Trump barely spoke about black accomplishments or contributions to America. Instead, Trump took the time to label a report that he removed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s bust from the Oval Office as fake news and discuss all of the problems facing the black community. He also seems to think Frederick Douglass, the famed abolitionist, might still be alive.
