The 1 Thing We Should All Be Very Worried About Right Now, According to Samantha Bee

President Donald Trump spends a whole lot of time talking about how much he's accomplished since taking office. While a tremendously long list of recent failures may serve as evidence to the contrary, Samantha Bee devoted an entire segment of her show on Aug. 9 to the one area that he actually is making headway on: judiciary appointments. And while it may not be the sexiest topic of conversation, it's one accomplishment that will have an enormous impact on every single American citizen in the future.

Back in 2013, when the Democrats still had control of Congress, then-Majority Leader Harry Reid made a very serious decision. Fed up with having the party's nominations blocked by Republican filibusters, he triggered the so-called "nuclear option," allowing Democrats to use their majority vote to force through their nominees. Now, it's coming back to haunt them: with well over 100 open federal court vacancies, Republicans are using the very same tactic to get those positions filled.

"Trump has picked 37 judges in six months," Bee exclaimed. "That's 20 more than Obama, and Obama didn't spend 14 hours a day angrily toilet-tweeting." And those 37 judges are almost exclusively white males . . . white males who will now enter positions that they will inhabit for life. That's right: federal appointments don't just last for a fixed term, which means that the future of domestic policy lies in the hands of individuals who represent a small sliver of the American population.

Watch Sam Bee theatrically binge-drink as she unpacks this news in the video above, but also remember the key takeaway from the segment: while the federal judiciary may not be the most exciting thing to think about, it's something we all ought to spend a bit more time thinking about going forward.
