Hulu's New Legal Drama "Reasonable Doubt" Is Loosely Based on a Famous Celebrity Attorney

Kerry Washington's "Scandal" days may be over, but her new legal series on Hulu is full of eyebrow-raising drama. "Reasonable Doubt," created, written, and executive produced by Raamla Mohamed — with Washington (soon starring in Netflix's "The School For Good and Evil") on board as another executive producer — is loosely based on celebrity attorney Shawn Holley, whose high-profile clients have included everyone from the Kardashian-Jenner clan to Justin Bieber.

"Reasonable Doubt" stars breakout actor Emayatzy Corinealdi as Jacqueline "Jax" Stewart, a criminal-defense attorney from Los Angeles who "fiercely bucks the justice system through wild interpretations of the law and sometimes questionable ethics, all while trying to deal with a failing marriage and the pitfalls of motherhood," a description for the series reads.

The show's trailer arrived on Sept. 7 and teases a steamy love triangle between Corinealdi's Jax, her husband (played by McKinley Freeman), and her lover (portrayed by Michael Ealy), but that's just the tip of the iceberg. The "sexy legal drama" has much, much more going on both inside and outside the courtroom.

"Reasonable Doubt," a scripted series from Onyx Collective, is directed by Washington and has Holley and Jon Leshay serving as co-executive producers. Read ahead for everything else we know about the series, including its full cast and fall premiere date.

"Reasonable Doubt" Plot

"In 'Reasonable Doubt,' you'll judge Jax Stewart (Corinealdi) for her questionable ethics and wild interpretations of the law . . . until you're the one in trouble," the show's synopsis reads. "Then you'll see her for what she is: the most brilliant and fearless defense attorney in Los Angeles who bucks the justice system at every chance she gets."
