Another I Know What You Did Last Summer Movie Is Officially in the Works

It's official: we're getting another I Know What You Did Last Summer movie. On Feb. 6, Deadline reported Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will be directing a sequel to the popular 1997 horror film, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr.

The project will mark the fourth installment in the slasher-movie franchise, which was inspired by the 1973 novel "I Know What You Did Last Summer" by Lois Duncan. The story was also adapted into a TV series on Amazon Prime in 2021, but it was canceled after just one season. Now, Sony Pictures is bringing the franchise back to the big screen.

Although details about the new film are still under wraps, the three previous installments follow a group of teenagers who accidentally kill a man and then dump his body in the water to hide the evidence. They agree never to discuss what happened, but a year later, they're forced to relive the accident when they receive a threatening letter from someone claiming to know their dark secret. Soon after, they begin getting hunted by a hook-wielding killer.

So what will the new movie be about? And will any of the original cast members be returning? Scroll through the slideshow for everything we know about the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" sequel so far.

The cast hasn't been officially announced, however, rumor has it Hewitt and Prinze Jr., who starred in the first two I Know What You Did Last Summer films, are in talks to reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively. Unlike the 2021 TV adaptation, Deadline reports the upcoming film won't be a reboot. Instead, Sony Pictures is hoping to tell a "passing of the torch"-type story that will revolve around Hewitt and Prinze Jr.'s characters while also introducing new faces for a modern audience.

Similar to the previous films in the franchise, the villain for the upcoming "I Know What You Did Last Summer" sequel will likely be Ben Willis, aka The Fisherman, who uses a hook to kill his victims. Although he appeared to die at the end of the second film, this is a slasher film franchise, and anything can happen, so it's only fitting Willis will return to seek his revenge on the teens that managed to escape him twice. The only thing that's unclear is whether the events of the direct-to-DVD 2006 third installment (that starred an all-new cast and saw the Fisherman Killer return as a zombie) will be ret-conned.
