If you grew up in the American South, chances are you already knew what "million-dollar spaghetti" was long before it went viral on TikTok. Also called spaghetti casserole or baked spaghetti, the Southern comfort-food classic consists of spaghetti layered with white sauce, Bolognese, and shredded cheese.

The recipe that's being shared all over TikTok is made up of those same four components — with one notable difference. Rather than a blend of cream cheese, sour cream, ricotta, cottage cheese, and oftentimes beaten egg or shredded cheese, the white sauce in TikTok's modernized version is an Alfredo made with butter, heavy cream, garlic, and parmesan.

The part of the recipe that seems to have stuck — and for good reason — is the use of jarred marinara sauce. This ends up saving a lot of time since you'd otherwise have to make both a Bolognese and an Alfredo.

Both sauces are relatively easy to pull together. For the Bolognese, you simply sauté ground beef, bell pepper, and onion, to which you add the jarred marinara and your choice of seasoning. For the Alfredo, you melt the butter and stir in the heavy cream, garlic, and parmesan until it comes together as a thick and velvety sauce. This gets poured over the spaghetti, making up the first layer. For the second, you spoon on the Bolognese until the white sauce and spaghetti are completely covered. Top it all off with some shredded mozzarella, and pop it in the oven.

Most TikToks suggest baking it for about 15 minutes, but since all the ingredients are fully cooked and still warm by the time you finish assembling your casserole, a couple of minutes on broil works just as well. Easy, right? Try it out for yourself and find all the measurements and steps below. You won't be disappointed by the results.

INGREDIENTS

    • 1/2 pound ground beef
    • 1/4 cup chopped onions
    • 1/4 cup diced bell peppers
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
    • 1/2 teaspoon basil
    • 1 1/2 cups marinara sauce
    • 1/2 box of spaghetti
    • 4 tablespoons butter
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 cup heavy cream
    • 3/4 cup finely grated parmesan cheese
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella, more as needed
    • Parsley for garnishing

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Sauté onions and bell pepper in pan over medium heat, then add ground beef.

    2. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and basil.

    3. When beef begins to brown, add marinara sauce and stir until combined. Set aside.

    4. In a separate saucepan heated to medium, brown garlic in melted butter.

    5. Add cream and parmesan cheese, then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Be careful to not go overboard with the salt, as parmesan is naturally salty.

    6. Let simmer until slightly thickened. In the meantime, boil spaghetti.

    7. When spaghetti is al dente (or cooked to your liking), drain and transfer to a casserole dish or cast-iron pan.

    8. Pour the Alfredo over the spaghetti, stirring to ensure every noodle is coated in sauce.

    9. Layer on the Bolognese, then top with mozzarella.

    10. Bake in the oven heated to 350°F for 15 minutes, or broil on high until the cheese is fully melted, about 3 minutes.

    11. Top with parsley, serve, and enjoy!
