We've already dubbed 2013 the year of the Cumberbatch, but now it's time to hear from you. Before crowning Benedict, we had several fierce contenders.

There was Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield of Expedition 34, who tumbled, tweeted, and live streamed from the International Space Station, connecting with us earthlings from space like never before. Jenna Coleman, who took over the role of the Doctor's companion from our beloved Karen Gillan in March, was also tough competition. Speaking of Doctor Who, Matt Smith had a fantastic run as Eleven in his final season.

We're all for women in STEM as well, and the extraordinary women of NASA's 2013 astronaut class certainly inspired us this year. Four out of eight astronaut candidates were ladies! Another woman breaking barriers is Angela Ahrendts, the fashion-minded former Burberry CEO who will become Apple's first female executive as senior VP of retail.

In the world of science, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who is bringing a remake of Cosmos to primetime in 2014, hit the million-follower mark on Twitter and participated in a Reddit AMA that confirms yet again he is indeed a badass.

Benedict, of course, had an outstanding year, but so did his Sherlock costar Martin Freeman, who was phenomenal as Bilbo in this December's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Last but not least, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, whose book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead was the most searched book on Google in 2013. Not surprisingly, Sandberg was also named one of Time magazine's most influential people.
