What makes Rooney Mara such a badass is that when every other Hollywood star is focused on beauty trends like bronze contouring, smoky eyes, and neutral lips, she stays true to vampy style. For the 2016 Oscars, the Carol actress walked the red carpet wearing perhaps the most gorgeous grunge makeup look we've seen yet. Chanel makeup artist Kate Lee was responsible for this work of art, which we have an exclusive breakdown of ahead. Shop every product worn by Rooney, and discover tips on how to apply it. Plus, see the back of Rooney's intricately twisted updo.

Inspiration

"I'm always inspired by Rooney's coloring, naturally," said Lee. "I just have the best palette ever there. But I was also incredibly inspired by the shade of her dress: almost an antique, dove grey. I wanted to bridge the gap between her dramatic, dark hair color and her pale skin, and to use shades that would make her eyes pop. I chose a gray-violet tone on the eyes, and a deep Bordeaux, brick-red lip that could kick up the blue of her eye color."

Skin Care

"Skin is everything for me," Lee enthused. "I don't like to use heavy moisturizers, so I used Chanel Hydra Beauty Sérum ($97), which leaves no residue. I also applied sunscreen on her."

Complexion

"For Rooney's complexion, I used Chanel Perfection Lumière Velvet Smooth-Effect Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($48) in a mix of shades 10 Beige and 12 Beige Rosé, just a tiny bit where needed," Lee noted. "I chose that foundation because it dries velvety and matte, but you still have this beautiful luminosity. For the cheeks, I applied Chanel Powder Blush in Rose Pètale ($45)."

Eyes

"I elongated Rooney's eye shape with a light, gray-violet eye shadow, blended through the outer-third of her lids," Lee explained. "The shade nodded to the color of her dress without taking away from it. For her brows, I used Chanel Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Brun Cendré

($29). For her lashes, I applied a very scant coat of Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir ($32)."

Lips

Lee offers her finishing-touch tips: "For the lip look, I started with Chanel Aqua Crayon Lip Colour Stick in Cinnamon ($31), finessed with a brush, then layered on Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Sensuelle with a lip brush."
