63 Celebrities We Had to Say Goodbye to in 2018

We lost several celebrities in 2017, and 2018 wasn't any easier. Over the last 12 months, we've had to say goodbye to many others, from legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin to chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Let's pay our respects to the stars who sadly passed away this year.

Burt Reynolds

The actor, who was well-known for starring in Deliverance, died at age 82. Burt reportedly went into cardiac arrest at a hospital in Florida on Sept. 6, where he was surrounded by his family.

Craig Mack

Grammy-nominated rapper Craig Mack, who hit it big in the '90s with songs like "Flava in Ya Ear," passed away on March 12 from natural causes. The 47-year-old, who was one of the first to sign to Sean "Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy Records, was in his home in Walterboro, SC when it happened.

Reg Cathey

The actor, who was best known for roles on The Wire and House of Cards, died in February at the age of 59. The Wire creator reported the news via Twitter, writing, "Not only a fine, masterful actor. . . but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set. On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing."

Rayya Elias

The author died after her battle with pancreatic and liver cancer in early January. Her partner, Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert, confirmed the sad news in a heartbreaking post on Instagram, writing, "Thank you for letting me walk with you right to the edge of the river. It has been the greatest honor of my life. I would tell you to rest in peace, but I know that you always found peace boring." Rayya was 57.

DuShon Monique Brown

The Chicago Fire actress passed away on March 23 at age 49. The Chicago Tribune first reported the tragic news, and no cause of death had been reported at the time. "The Chicago Fire family is devastated to lose one of its own," executive producer Dick Wolf said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with DuShon's family and we will all miss her."

Jerry Van Dyke

The actor and younger brother of fellow comedian Dick Van Dyke passed away at age 86 in January. His wife, Shirley Ann Jones, told The New York Times that his health had deteriorated since a traffic accident in 2015.

Jon Paul Steuer

The actor, who was best known for his work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, died at age 33 in January. While no other details have been released at this time, his band, P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S., announced his death on its Facebook page, writing, "It is with heavy hearts and saddened minds that we announce the passing of our dear friend and singer Jonny Jewels, AKA Jon Paul Steuer. . . . We've lost our singer, but far, far more than that we've lost a friend. Rest in peace, Jonny . . . we love you."

Denise LaSalle

The "Trapped by a Thing Called Love" singer passed away in Jackson, TN, in January. According to Page Six, Denise suffered from undisclosed health issues in recent months that caused her to have her leg amputated after she suffered a fall. She was 78.

Donnelly Rhodes

The Canadian actor, who was best remembered for his performance in Battlestar Galactica, died after his battle with cancer in January. He was 80.

Peggy Cummins

The actress, who starred in the 1950 classic Gun Crazy, died of a stroke in January. She was 92.

Dolores O'Riordan

The Cranberries singer died at 46 in January. According to her publicist, Lindsey Holmes, Dolores suddenly passed in London, where she had been recording.

Olivia Cole

The Roots actress died at age 75 in January. Her cause of death is still unknown.

France Gall

The French singer passed away in Paris after her battle with cancer. She was 70.

Dorothy Malone

The Peyton Place actress died in Dallas, TX, of natural causes in January. She was 92.

Edwin Hawkins

The gospel singer, who was well-known for his hit song "Oh Happy Day," died on Jan. 15 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He was 74.

Peter Wyngarde

The British actor, who is best remembered for his role as Timanov in Doctor Who, died at age 90 in London in January. "Peter Wyngarde passed away peacefully in his sleep early evening Monday at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital," his agent Thomas Bowington told Variety. "[He] was one of the most original and truly great actors I've ever seen and by far the most exceptional man I have ever met."

Connie Sawyer

Connie died in her home in Woodland Hills, CA at the age of 105. She worked up until 2017 and was known as Hollywood's oldest working actress.

Mark E. Smith

The Fall frontman passed away at the age of 60 in January. "It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith," the band's manager Pam Van Damned announced on Twitter. "He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark's family request privacy at this sad time."

Lari White

The country singer died after a battle with cancer in January. She was 52.

Bobby Zarin

Bobby, who was married to Jill Zarin from The Real Housewives of New York City, passed away after a battle with cancer in January. "Today is a sad day with a silver lining. I laughed. I cried. I saw old faces & watched a family come together surrounding a loss," Jill wrote on Twitter. "'I have a dream' that Bobby's death makes us realize what is important & treat each day as our last." Bobby was 71.

Dennis Edwards

The former lead singer of Temptations died in a hospital in Chicago, one of his booking agents confirmed to the New York Times. He was 74 and his cause of death has yet to be announced.

John Mahoney

The actor, who played Marty Crane on Frasier, passed away in February at the age of 77.

Mickey Jones

The actor, who had roles in National Lampoon's Vacation and on Home Improvement, died in February following a long-term illness. He was 76.

John Perry Barlow

The Grateful Dead lyricist and cofounder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation died in his sleep on Feb. 7. He was 70. Cindy Cohn, director of the EFF, confirmed the news on the foundation's website. "We will miss Barlow and his wisdom for decades to come, and he will always be an integral part of EFF," she wrote.

Mark Salling

The former Glee actor died from an apparent suicide in January. He was 35.

Daryle Singletary

The country singer died at age 46 in February. Daryle's cause of death is still pending.

Vic Damone

The singer died surrounded by his family in Miami in February. He was 89.

John Gavin

The Psycho actor died at age 86 in February. "He died this morning after a long illness," his manager, Budd Burton, told Fox News.

Marty Allen

The comedian died from complications from pneumonia in Las Vegas in February. He was 95.

Prince Henrik of Denmark

The Royal House has confirmed the French-born prince and husband of Queen Margrethe passed away "peacefully in his sleep" on Feb. 13. He had recently been admitted to a hospital with a lung infection, and was suffering from dementia. He was 83.

Emma Chambers

The Notting Hill actress passed away in February at the age of 53. Her death was due to "natural causes," according to a statement released by her agent, John Grant, Deadline reports.

Nanette Fabray

The actress, who starred on the original One Day at a Time, died on Feb. 22 at her home in Palos Verdes, CA. She was 97.

David Ogden Stiers

David Ogden Stiers, known for providing the voice of Cogsworth in Disney's Beauty & the Beast, passed away on March 3 at age 75. David's agent, Mitchell K. Stubbs, confirmed the sad news in a tweet, writing, "David died this morning . . . peacefully at his home in Newport, Oregon after a courageous battle with bladder cancer."

Susan Anspach

The actress, best known for her roles in Five Easy Pieces and Blume in Love, died from coronary failure on April 2. She was 75.

Yvonne Staples

The singer, who provided background vocals and managed the family group the Staple Singers, died on April 10 at her home in Chicago. According to family friend Bill Carpenter, she was suffering from colon cancer. She was 80.

Harry Anderson

The Night Court star died at his home in Asheville, NC, in April. He was 65.

R. Lee Ermy

The actor, who's best remembered for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in 1987's Full Metal Jacket, died of complications due to pneumonia in April. He was 74.

Avicii

The Swedish DJ, whose real name was Tim Bergling, was found dead in Muscat, Oman on April 20. He was 28.

Bob Dorough

The Jazz musician, who was best known for Schoolhouse Rock!, died at age 94 in April.

Margot Kidder

The actress — who was best known for her role as Lois Lane in 1978's Superman — died in May, her rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. She was 69.

Kate Spade

The fashion designer was found dead in her NYC apartment of an apparent suicide in June. She was 55.

Jerry Maren

The actor, who played a member of the Lollipop Guild in 1939's The Wizard of Oz, passed away in May. He was the last living munchkin from the classic film.

Alan O'Neill

The Sons of Anarchy actor was found dead by his girlfriend at her LA home in June. His cause of death has yet to be released, but according to TMZ, Alan had a history of alcohol and drug abuse. He was 47.

Anthony Bourdain

On June 8, CNN confirmed that the famed chef had died, stating that the cause of death was suicide. "It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," CNN said in a statement. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much." He was 61.

Jackson Odell

The actor, known for his work on The Goldbergs and Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, died on June 8 in the San Fernando Valley, TMZ reports. The cause of death is still unknown but there were no reported signs of foul play.

XXXTentacion

The 20-year-old rapper, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, died after being shot while shopping for motorcycles in South Florida on June 18. According to TMZ, "cops believe the incident was a possible robbery." The Broward Co. Sheriff's Dept. is offering a reward up to $3,000 for anyone who might have a tip that leads to an arrest in the shooting.

Joe Jackson

The Jackson family patriarch passed away in late June after his long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 89.

Richard Swift

The Black Keys musician died at age 41 in July. His bandmate, Dan Auerbach, confirmed the sad news on Instagram, writing, "Today the world lost one of the most talented musicians I know. He's now with his Mom and Sister. I will miss you my friend." His cause of death remains unclear.

Tab Hunter

The Damn Yankees! actor died on July 8. He was 86.

Nancy Sinatra Sr.

Nancy Sinatra, the first wife of Frank Sinatra, died on July 13 at the age of 101, according to a tweet from her daughter.

Jonathan Gold

Pulitzer award-winning food critic Jonathan Gold, age 57, died of pancreatic cancer on July 21.

Elmarie Wendel

The 3rd Rock from the Sun actress died at age 89 in July. Her daughter J.C. confirmed the news on Instagram writing, "#ripelmariewendel you were a great mom and a badass dame," alongside a photo of her from the series.

Rick Genest

The model, who was known as "Zombie Boy," died at age 32. His management company, Dulcedo Management, confirmed his death on its Facebook page.

Charlotte Rae

The actress, who starred on The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes, died at age 92 in August. Rae previously announced that she had been diagnosed with bone cancer in April 2017.

Aretha Franklin

The Queen of Soul passed away in August at the age of 76 after a lengthy battle with cancer. The legendary singer was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and retired from music late last year. Her last performance was on Nov. 2, 2017, for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in New York. Aretha is survived by her four children, Ted White Jr., Kecalf Cunningham, Clarence Franklin, and Edward Franklin.

John McCain

The longtime Arizona senator and war hero passed away on Aug. 25, at the age of 81, after battling with brain cancer.

Neil Simon

The acclaimed screenwriter and playwright died at the age of 91, on Aug. 26, following complications with pneumonia.

Mac Miller

The rapper, whose real name was Malcolm James McCormick, died at age 26. He reportedly passed away from an apparent overdose in his California home.

Audrey Wells

The Hate U Give screenwriter passed away on Oct. 4, a day before the film's release, after a long battle with cancer. Her husband, Brian Larky, confirmed the news in a statement, saying, "Over the last five and half years, Audrey fought valiantly against her illness, and she died surrounded by love."

Devin Lima

The LFO singer died on Nov. 21, following a year-long battle with adrenal cancer. He was 41. His mother, Filomena Lima, confirmed the news to Us Weekly saying that he passed away in his home at 2:45 in the morning.

Penny Marshall

The Hollywood director and actress died at age 75 in December. Penny reportedly passed away from complications from diabetes.

Frank Adonis

The actor, who is best known for his role in Goodfellas, died from various health issues including kidney problems on Dec. 26 at age 83. His wife Denise confirmed the news to TMZ saying, "He will be missed. He was a great father and an amazing husband. He helped all his friends he could. Great writer, director, and actor. He was my best friend."

Dame June Whitfield

The London-born Absolutely Fabulous actress passed away at age 93 on Dec. 28. Julia Sawalha, who played her granddaughter on the show tweeted that Whitfield had been a "great source of inspiration" to her as an up-and-coming actress, and was "far too humble to accept my adoration."
