Orange Is the New Black: Who Plays All the Young Inmates in the Flashbacks?

For Janae's heartbreaking backstory in season five, OITNB wisely cast actress Journee Brown, who perfectly captures Janae's frustration. This is Brown's first role.

Mia Sinclair Jenness took on the role of young, resilient Frieda Berlin (played by Dale Soules as an adult) in season five, which adds to her résumé of previous work in movies like Hotel Transylvania 2 and A Letter to Momo.

Are you ready to see Red as a 20-something? Her season five flashback sends us to Russia, where Red and a friend, Nadezhda, are just trying to get through the monotony of their factory jobs while withering under the Soviet Union’s restrictive rule. In these scenes she's played by Russian actress Xenia Leblanc, who's most notable other role is in the TV show Broken English.

When Daya goes to camp as a young girl, she's played by Jheel Haldar, who doesn't have any other acting credits.

We get to see young Daya again in season five, only this time she's a teenager. Fourteen-year-old Daya looks so much like the grown-up version that you might start to wonder if the show is using special effects of some kind, but it turns out the only special effects they needed were Dascha Polanco's own daughter. Young Daya is played by 16-year-old Dasany Kristal Gonzalez, the eldest of Polanco's three children.

Thirteen-year-old Carrie is played by Melanie Hinkle, who has been in a number of shows, including One Life to Live, The Carrie Diaries, Unrelated, and Happyish. The now-24-year-old also played a paramedic in 2014's Sharknado 2: The Second One.

Teresa Ting portrayed the badass young Chang. You can catch her as Alyssa Yang in the upcoming CBS series Bull.

A young actress by the name of Bria Yvette Beauvis played Claudette as a child. Beauvis only has one other acting credit, for a small role in the 2010 pilot for Outlaw.

Young bank robber Rosa is played by Stephanie Andujar, who starred in Precious and the show Mercy before Orange Is the New Black. Since then, she's been the 2014 movie A Walk Among the Tombstones and an episode of Blindspot.

There's a reason young Caputo looks familiar; actor John D'Leo has been in movies like The Wrestler, Cop Out, Wanderlust, The Family, and Unbroken.

We were so curious about who the actress who plays young Lolly that we had to investigate. Turns out that it's Christina Brucato, who starred in 1995's Welcome to the Dollhouse back in the day. Look for her in the upcoming drama Sidney Hall.

Young Maria is played by the adorable Allison Pena, who has no other roles at this time. (Because she is a teeny, tiny child.)

2015 was a big year for Carla Oudin — she also starred as 5-year-old Kim (Brie Larson) in Trainwreck!

Kristin Parker played the 1975 version of Norma. She's been in the obligatory episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as a couple of short films.

When Jane is just beginning her career as a nun, she's played by Aubrey Sinn. She's also been in a miniseries called Jumpers Edge and a TV movie called Between Bedford.

Young Piper should look familiar to viewers of Gotham; Clare Foley plays Ivy Pepper on the show. She has a long résumé already, starring in Win Win, Sinister, Southpaw, Sinister 2, and Mistress America.

Jade Tuck starred as young Poussey, and unless you've seen the short film Hallow Gate, OITNB is probably the only place you've seen her.

Zachary Doran has played young Sam in three episodes across the series; it's been his only acting gig so far.

Young Brook is played by Ella Hampton, who hasn't acted outside of OITNB.

Despite her young age, Oona Laurence has racked up a lot of credits. As far as TV goes, she's been in Louie, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (duh), and Blindspot. You've also seen her on the big screen in Southpaw and I Smile Back. Next up, you'll notice her in Bad Moms and Pete's Dragon.

How cute is little Suzanne? Taliyah Whitaker played her, and she's also been on the kids shows Odd Squad and Wallykazam! Also, you guessed it, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
