7 Things You May Not Know About Power Couple Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert's love story is one for the books. The couple first began their relationship as friends, but it didn't take very long for it to evolve into a romance. In 2014, they made their love official, and two years later, they tied the knot.

"When a female catch butterflies, you know it's real. Because up to that moment, I didn't like him on that level," Taylor told VH1 in March 2018. "When you catch butterflies, it's almost like do you run away from it and get scared and miss out on love or do you just follow your gut?"

In 2018, the pair landed their own reality TV series with VH1, "Teyana & Iman," which they then followed up with their E! show, "We Got Love Teyana & Iman," in 2021. Similar to their first series, the show followed the couple as they navigated their careers and family life with their two kids, Junie and Rue.

In October, Taylor and Shumpert will celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary. Learn more about their relationship ahead.

  1. Taylor played hard to get when she first met Shumpert. "I did not like him at first because when I first met him, he had just got drafted. He was young and doing a lot. I was at a party. He was drunk and had his shirt off. It was just too much going on, baby," Taylor told Wendy Williams in 2018. "We eventually wound up becoming friends, and I actually shot him for one of my styling companies." Taylor and Shumpert's friendship turned romantic in the end, and they've been going strong ever since.
  2. They got married in the bathroom. After getting engaged in November 2015, the pair secretly tied the knot the following year. "We got married in the bathroom where our baby was born [Junie], so we just wanted it for good luck before we did the big wedding," Taylor told Williams. "It wasn't like inside the bathroom. We had like little cute double doors. It still looked cute."

  1. When they first met, they gave each other a list of all their previous sex partners. Shumpert and Taylor did this so they wouldn't be taken by surprise if they ever ran into any of their exes, Shumpert told VladTV in 2020.
  2. Taylor gets embarrassed when Shumpert sings her songs when they're out at dinner or in a quiet room. "You just hear him singing a whole bunch of Teyana Taylor songs! Songs that's not even out yet," she previously told GQ. "He sings all of them in falsetto. And then he has the nerve to add his own adlibs on my songs!" However, Shumpert said he only does it because he just really enjoys her music. "When she makes songs, they get stuck in my head quick," he explained. "I get that we're married, but if I like the song, I'm not going to be like, 'Oh, I'm not going to sing it because I don't want to seem like I like my wife's song too much.'"

  1. They both agree that communication is the key to a healthy relationship. "We communicate on a day-to-day basis and just know what's going on with each other so much that [between] the things that we're supposed to do as far as our job goes and as far as just checking in, there's no real room for the nonsense," Taylor told GQ.
  2. Oh, and keeping their sex life spicy is important, too. "What I live by is that if everything is perfect 24/7, sex would eventually get boring," Taylor told People. "We like the mad sex, the attitude sex, the passionate sex — this is what it's for."

  1. Shumpert delivered their daughter Junie at home. "On Dec 16th at 6:42am in our bathroom Junie decided she wanted to take her first breath into this world. She came out as a wonderful surprise to everyone!" Taylor wrote on Instagram in December 2015. "Not knowing I was in labor until I felt her head . . . it took two ten count pushes with my fiancé playing Dr and she entered this world into his bare hands! Eyes full of tears and barely able to speak to the emergency operator @imanshumpert tied a pair of red headphones around the umbilical cord and the ambulance made there grand entrance 5 min later. She opened her eyes right away, gazed into mine and never cried! He handed her to me wrapped in our bath towel and wiped her face for me to see what LOVE really is. She has blown Christmas away! Our family is complete. Her blueprint will be unmatched. Welcome Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. Mommy carried you. Daddy delivered you."
