10 Terrifying Films Only Fans of The Haunting of Hill House Can Handle

In this creepy flick, a retired horror writer suffering from dementia (played by Paula Prentiss) hires a live-in nurse (played by Ruth Wilson) to care for both her and her Braintree, MA, estate. However, what the writer fails to mention to her new caretaker is that Polly, the fictional protagonist of her most popular novel, The Lady in the Walls, is not actually be fictional, and that she may have been killed in the estate the writer now inhabits.

This Indonesian horror flick tells the story of Alfie, a young woman who, summoned to her estranged father's deathbed, learns that she is the sole inheritor of the old family villa. Hoping to find something of value in the estate, Alfie and her step-sister visit the villa, only to discover that the Devil has also come calling to collect his due. We guarantee that you'll never wish to inherit property after watching this one.

In it, Haley Bennett stars as Molly, a troubled teenager who narrowly escapes her abusive mother to get a fresh start at a new school. However, just as Molly thinks she may have left her dark past behind, her 18th birthday approaches, and with it, the realization that she is possessed by something much darker than bad memories.

Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane star in this movie as foster parents who take in an eight-year-old boy, Cody (played by Jacob Tremblay), only to learn that the young boy's dreams can turn into reality — and so can his nightmares. Though the parents had welcomed the new addition to their family hoping to forget about the biological son they lost, Cody's ability to bring things means the couple will always be haunted by their lost son until they can put a stop to Cody's power.

One of the most famous haunted house movies of all time, this flick revolves around a suburban family whose new home in California becomes haunted by malevolent beings, eventually taking the youngest member of the family, Carol Ann, captive. The family then must work together with the help of a parapsychologist and exorcist to get their daughter back. Though the 2015 remake isn't bad, we'll always be partial to the 1982 version that remains a horror cult classic.

This supernatural horror flicks revolves around a New Orleans nurse, Caroline (played by Kate Hudson), who decides to quit her job at a hospice to work for an elderly woman who lives in a rundown Bayou mansion with her husband, who recently suffered a stroke. The longer that Caroline spends in the dilapidated estate, however, the more strange artifacts she discovers, and the more suspicious she becomes about the cause of the elderly man's illness.

In this seriously terrifying movie, Nicole Kidman plays Grace, a devoutly religious mother of two who hires three new servants to work in their remote country house in the Channel Islands. When Grace's daughter claims to have seen ghosts, Grace initially believes the new servants are messing with them, but when she experiences visions of her own, she begins to believe that something supernatural must have occurred in their home. This film is partially based on Henry James's gothic story, The Turn of the Screw, and it will make you realize why psychological horror can be far more frightening than flashy effects.

Taking place in the 1970s and based on true events, this 2013 thriller revolves around paranormal investigating pair Lorraine and Ed (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson) who visit a secluded New England farmhouse that a family of seven recently moved into — and where a supernatural presence has made itself known. The supernatural happenings seem harmless at first, but that escalates quickly once Lorraine and Ed discover the dark history of the farmhouse. We honestly think we'd rather live in Hill House than this house.

Another horror cult classic, this 1979 flick (and inferior 2005 remake) is based on the book by Jay Anson and inspired by the purportedly true experiences of the Lutz family. In the movie, a couple decides to purchase a large Dutch colonial in the Long Island neighborhood of Amityville, NY, significantly discounted after the former tenant shot six members of his family there 13 months before. As you can expect, paranormal creepiness ensues, and the family must enlist the help of a priest to rid the place of evil spirits.

Inspired by several horror classics, such as The Haunting, The Innocents, and The Shining, this movie is set in Victorian-era England and follows aspiring author Edith (played by Mia Wasikowska), who decides to move into a remote Gothic mansion in the English hills with her fiancé (played by Tom Hiddleston) and his sister (played by Jessica Chastain). It doesn't take long before Edith is visited by the ghostly visions that haunt the old mansion — or before she learns that her fiancé and his sister aren't exactly what they seem.
