This Aquarius Season Playlist Will Let Out Your Inner Individualist

Ah, Aquarius season! Aquarians — born from Jan. 20 to Feb. 18 — are known for their fierce individualism, love of the arts, social skills, and innovation. Aquarians are never afraid to do things exactly the way they want to, and they have a natural impulse to live an authentic, unique life (Just one rule with an Aquarian – don't limit them!). Sure, they can be a bit stubborn, but that's exactly what allows them to reach their goals, even when that means your Aquarian BFF is sure her choice of restaurant is the best tonight (again). Take Shakira for example, who was rejected from her elementary school's choir for her strong vibrato after her teacher infamously compared her voice to a goat's (#justicefor2ndgradeShakira). The Colombian singer never stopped singing and dancing, though, and soon landed a record deal with Sony that led her to become one of the most important crossover Latin singers ever. If you're in the mood for a playlist that can allow you to play into your own independence, progressiveness, and passion for freedom, especially in these first months of 2020, then this will be perfect for you. This playlist goes quite well with plotting your next moves (work-wise but also love-wise!) and for getting creative, as Aquarians are known as the visionaries of the zodiac.

"Heartless" by The Weeknd

The Weeknd, born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye on Feb. 16, is the epitome of an Aquarian artist. Never one to follow trends, The Weeknd has stayed true to his melancholy, dark lyrics and sensual, mysterious music from the start of his career with his self-released mixtape House of Balloons (still can't go without listening to "Wicked Games" for more than a month). After grabbing Drake's attention, and even writing four of the songs on Take Care, his career took off, proving his clear-cut, Aquarian vision of his career was worth fighting for (all about the visionaries!). The trippy video for his latest single "Heartless" shows his insistence on creating art that isn't like anyone else's.

"Me Gusta" by Shakira & Anuel AA

Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, on Feb. 2, Shakira shows her Aquarius sensibility by never following rules and constantly paving her own path. The singer embraced her Lebanese heritage and belly dancing techniques, as well as her unique voice and poetic lyrics, when no one else in the music industry understood her style. It paid off: Shakira has sold more than 75 million records and is one of the world's top-selling musical artists. Her style is ever-evolving too, which is an Aquarius trait due to its ruling planet of Uranus. From a purple wig in her "Las De La Intuición" video to her trademark blond curls, or from singing "Antología" with her acoustic guitar or over a reggaeton beat with Anuel AA, Shakira constantly evolves but still retains her essence.

"Summer Girl" by HAIM

HAIM is the sister act you always dreamed of being in (Just me?), full of camaraderie, fun pop synths and raw, multi-instrumental talent. Danielle Haim, born Feb. 16, is the guitarist of the band (all three sing) and was the first of the three sisters to professionally pursue music. Discovered right after high school, the middle child of the three sisters became a touring guitarist for Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas of The Strokes. Determined to make music with her sisters, Danielle chose to go the very Aquarian, independent route and leave those jobs behind, forming HAIM for our musical pleasure forever. "Put It All on Me" by Ed Sheeran (feat. Ella Mai)

Those born during Aquarius season are known to be shy or timid at first, but quickly break their shell and show their true, superpowerful self, especially when pursuing their passion. Ed Sheeran (Feb. 17) seems to be no exception to this rule, presenting a laid-back, quiet demeanor but showing his intense, fiery side as soon as he has a guitar in his hands. Sheeran started his career singing with his favorite instrument on the streets of Framlingham in Suffolk, England, self-releasing music and taking a DIY approach to his career. Dead set on pursuing his vision of making acoustic music with a focus on songwriting, even when that wasn't being given much radio play at the time, shows how much of an Aquarian Sheeran really is. Watch his new video for "Put It All on Me," featuring his adorable wife Cherry Seaborn.

"Adore You" by Harry Styles

Out of all of the members of One Direction, Harry Styles (Feb. 1) was always the one who seemed to march to the beat of his own drum, even when they all sang the same songs. Today, Styles has the freedom to be completely himself (Could an Aquarian love anything more?!) and he is totally taking advantage of it, wearing flamboyant velvet and lace outfits (I want one of each, thanks) and making music that is '70s-tinged electronic pop. Listen to the addictive "Watermelon Sugar" and his latest single, "Adore You."

"A Sunday Kind of Love" by Etta James

"A Sunday Kind of Love" is the kind of song you could imagine starts playing when you first see the love of your life (still thinking if it played the first time I saw pizza) and can always be counted on to give you all the warm feelings. Etta James (Jan. 25) had arguably the best voice of her generation, and came up from the most difficult of circumstances in her hometown of Los Angeles, not knowing who her father was, barely seeing her mother, and suffering from abuse at the hands of vocal coaches and foster parents. James never gave up, and has now been inducted in every single Hall of Fame in existence.

"What Goes Around . . . Comes Around" by Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake (Jan. 31) is the king of reinvention and of evolution, which as stated before, is one of the single most important Aquarius traits, shown through its symbol as the ever-changeable water-bearer and it being an air sign. Through their insight about the future and pure vision, which gives them the ability to present successful ideas, Aquarians have the confidence to change and evolve, knowing it will work. J.T. has evolved countless times, from his *NSYNC "Bye, Bye, Bye" days to his first solo project with "Cry Me a River," to FutureSex/LoveSounds and later with The 20/20 Experience.

"Fidelity" by Regina Spektor

"Fidelity" is simply one of the most perfect songs to be released in the past decades, in regard to both the melodies and the lyrics: "I never loved nobody fully / Always one foot on the ground / And by protecting my heart truly / I got lost in the sounds / I hear in my mind." Indie goddess Regina Spektor (who is a cusper born on Feb. 18) was born in Russia but moved to the Bronx at the age of 9 with her family due to discrimination in the Soviet Union at the time toward Jewish people. Spektor is a trained classical pianist and gifted songwriter who in a very Aquarian way, never let past difficulties get in the way of pursuing her dreams – she even has her own day in New York City now courtesy of Mayor Bill de Blasio (June 11)! Also, her new version of the theme song for Orange Is the New Black is even better than the original.

Who else remembers this song from the Apple iPod Nano commercial years ago?! Feist (Feb. 13) is the epitome of a manic pixie dream girl, and one of the most talented indie-alternative female singer songwriters out there. "1234" has a melody that seems simple at first, almost like a lullaby, but a closer look at the lyrics shows a song that deals with innocence lost, age, love, and hope.
