Another "Stranger Things" Character Was Supposed to Die in the Finale

If you're still emotionally wounded from the major deaths in season four of "Stranger Things," we have good news: it could have been worse. The Duffer brothers, who created the series, revealed in a new interview that another fan-favorite member of the cast was originally supposed to die before the fourth season came to a close.

Matt Duffer told Collider: "In terms of who makes it, who lives or dies. I think there was a version where Dimitri, AKA Enzo, didn't make it." Dmitri is played by Tom Wlaschiha, who you might also recognize as Jaqen H'ghar from "Game of Thrones." In season four of "Stranger Things," he and Hopper (David Harbour) strike up an unlikely friendship while Hopper is being held in a Russian prison.

"Then he ended up making it," Matt told Collider. "But that's [the most] radical of a departure from the original idea versus what we ended up with." In season four, Dmitri makes it out of the Russian prison alive with Hopper, Joyce (Winona Ryder), and Murray (Brett Gelman). Fans did notice he was absent at the end when Hopper and Joyce return to Hawkins, so it's not clear if he makes the journey all the way to Indiana with them or if he'll appear in the show again.

Ross Duffer told the outlet about how they're always thinking about the season finale as they start working on a season. "When we're breaking a season, that is one of the first things we're talking about is, where do we want this story to end up? So the ending is always that goal post," he explained. "Even as we're breaking episode one, we know exactly where we're going. I don't think we've deviated truly in any season for the finale, we've always stuck to it. I believe the case is the same here."

The Duffer brothers are planning to begin writing the show's fifth and final season this August.
